Thepurposeoftheignitionsystemistocreateasparkthatwillignitethefuel-airmixtureinthecylinderofanengine.Theignitionsystemisdividedintotwosections,theprimarycircuitandthesecondarycircuit.Thelowvoltageprimarycircuitoperatesatbatteryvoltage(12to14.5volts)andisresponsibleforgeneratingthesignaltofirethesparkplugattheexactrighttimeandsendingthatsignaltotheignitioncoil.Theignitioncoilisthecomponentthatconvertsthe12voltsignalintothehigh20,000+voltcharge.Oncethevoltageissteppedup,itgoestothesecondarycircuitwhichthendirectsthechargetothecorrectsparkplugattherighttime.Chapter6AutomotiveElectricalandElectronicSystems

6.4IgnitionSystems

Therearethreedistincttypesofignitionsystems.Theconventionalignitionsystem(Figure6-9)wasmechanicalandelectricalandusednoelectronics.Theelectronicignitionsystem(Figure6-10)startedfindingitswaytoproductionvehiclesduringtheearly'70sandbecamepopularwhenbettercontrolandimprovedreliabilitybecameimportantwiththeadventofemissioncontrols.Finally,thedistributorlessignitionsystem(Figure6-11)becameavailableinthemid'80s.Thissystemwasalwayscomputercontrolledandcontainednomovingparts,soreliabilitywasgreatlyimproved.Theignitionsystemsonnewerautomobilesarecompletelycontrolledbytheon-boardcomputer.

Onsomevehicles,thereisanindividualcoilforeachcylindermounteddirectlyontopofthesparkplug.Theindependentignitionsystemwithintegratedignitionmodulesintoeachcoilassemblytypicallyusefourwiresconnectedtotheprimarysideoftheassembly(Figure6-12).Thefourwiresconsistofbatterypositive,ground,ignitiontimingsignal,andignitionconfirmationsignal.ThePCMusestheignitionconfirmationsignaltodetermineifacoilisnotoperating.Theprimarycircuitsofthesecoilscannotbetestedwithanohmmeter.Thisdesigncompletelyeliminatesthehightensionsparkplugwiresforevenbetterreliability.Mostofthesesystemsusesparkplugsthataredesignedtolastover100,000miles,whichcutsdownonmaintenancecosts.Chapter6AutomotiveElectricalandElectronicSystems

Thesupplementalrestraintsystem(SRS)isdesignedtoworkinconcertwiththeseatbeltstofurtherpreventpersonalinjuryduringahead-oncollisionwithanotherobject.TheSRSutilizesanairbagmodule,frontimpactsensors,aclockspring(orspiralcable),andcontrolmodule.Withthebatterycablesconnected,theSRSsystemisenergizedandmonitoringthefrontimpactsensorsandthesafingsensorforcollisionconfirmationmessages.Whenthevehiclestrikes,orisstruckby,anotherobject,thefrontimpactsensorsandsafingsensorsendimpulsestothecontrolmodule,whichdeterminestheforceanddirectionoftheimpact.Basedonthisin
