Theproblemarosebecauseastronomershavenoticedthatsomeplanetsintheskyseemedtostop,movebackwardandthengoforwardinaloop.Othersappearedbrighterattimesandlessbrightinothers.Thiswasverystrangewhentheearthwasthecentreofthesolarsystemandallplanetswentroundit.

Copernicushadthoughtlongandhardabouttheseproblemsandtriedtofindananswer.Hehadcollectedobservationsofthestarsandusedallhismathematicalknowledgetoexplainit.Butonlyhisnewtheorycoulddothat.Sobetween1510to1514heworkedonit,graduallyimprovedhistheoryuntilhefeltitwascomplete.

In1514heshoweditprivatelytohisfriends.Thechanges(that)hemadetotheoldtheorywasrevolutionary.Heplacedafixedsunatthecentreofthesolarsystemwiththeplanetswentrounditandonlythemoonstillgoingroundtheearth.Healsosuggestedthattheearthwasspinningasitwentroundthesunandthisexplainedchangesinthemovementoftheplanetsandinthebrightnessofthestars.Hisfriendswereenthusiasticandencouragedhimtopublishhisideas,butCopernicuswascautious.HedidnotwanttobeattackedbytheChristianChurch,butheonlypublisheditashelaiddyingin1543.
