mi).TheurbanareaofNaplesextendsbeyondtheadministrativecitylimits,withapopulationofabovethreemillion.BackgroundThecityofPompeiiisapartiallyburiedRomantown-citynearmodernNaples.Pompeiiwaspartiallydestroyedandburiedunder4to6m(13to20ft)ofashandpumiceintheeruptionofMountVesuviusinAD79,anditwaslostfornearly1700yearsbeforeitsaccidentalrediscoveryin1749.Sincethen,itsexcavationhasprovidedanextraordinarilydetailedinsightintothelifeofacityduringthePaxRomana.Today,thisUNESCOWorldHeritageSiteisoneofthemostpopulartouristattractionsofItaly,withapproximately2,500,000visitorseveryyear.CultureTipsBackgroundPompeiitheLastDayAmultidisciplinarystudyoftheeruptionproductsandvictimsindicatesthatatVesuviusandsurroundingtowns,heatwasthemaincauseofdeathofpeople,previouslybelievedtohavediedfromashsuffocation.Theresultsofthestudy,publishedin,showthatexposuretoatleast250
