Close to 2,900 men and women competed in the 2014 Winter Games about a month ago. The Olympics brought a lot of attention to Sochi, a city on the black Sea, which is a popular area for vacation travelers. The area is known for its mild winters, with warm to summer. At least $ 50 billion was spent on the 2014 Winter Games, making it the costliest Olympics in history. Seven billion was spent on the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. Olympic officials chose Sochi to host the 2014 games almost seven years ago. At that time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the games would cost about $ 12 billion. Yet times his estimate. So where did all the money go? Some observers say the high cost is partly the result of security measures. Brian Jenkins, a terrorism expert from the RAND Corporation, gave the following explanation. There were anywhere between 70,000 and 100,000 policemen and military troops deployed(部署)around the city. The main threat came from separatists and Islamist groups from the North Caucasus, especially from Chechnya and Dagestan. One group claimed responsibility for two suicide bombings in Volgograd last December. The attacks killed more than 30 people. The city is only about 600 kilometers away from Sochi. Bruce Hoffman is a terrorism expert from Georgetown University in Washington D. C. He says the increased security made Sochi a difficult target for terrorists. It is thought that the terrorists intention was to make life difficult for the Russians and to create some sort of incident that would take away the enjoyment. The last Olympians from around the world on Russian soil was in 1980. That was a year after Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan. More than sixty countries didnt take part in the Moscow Summer Games to show their anger.21. According to the passage, why did the Sochi Winter Olympics cost so much?A. Because it was held at an area popular for vacation travelers.B. Because the Russian government wanted to make it the best ever held.C. Because security measures at Sochi were stricter than before.D. Because the original plan was made 7 years before.22. It can be known from the passage that Bruce Hoffman was .A. a terrorism expert from the USA B. the writer who wrote this articleC. an athlete who competed in Sochi D. a terrorism expert form RAND Corporation23. Which of the following is FALSE?A. Sochi Olympics cost about 4 times as estimated.B. Next winter Olympics will be held in Vancouver. C. Many countries refused to attend the 1980 Olympics. D. Security is often a problem in international sport games.24. The terrorists might have attacked Sochi Olympics because .A. they wanted to make trouble for the RussiansB. they thought Russian shouldnt spend so much on sport.C. they thought Putin was not a nice president.D. they were not interested in winter sports.B No one knows how much money Dr. Lyle Tullis gave away to students. I was his colleague for nearly a decade and I never stopped being amazed at his generosity. Our college has a program of providing cross-cultural experiences for students. Lots of students take advantage of summer experience oversea. I discovered that no group left for overseas with some of its members receiving financial help from Dr. Tullis. It wasnt that he made a lot of money. For one thing, he taught in a church-run school. There, his salary was half of what those people earned in a tax-supported school. Other colleagues occasionally complained about the low pay. Not Lyle Tullis. Occasionally some professors would leave our campus for a better-paid position. They told me they did so because, with better pay, they could provide for their families. The size of Lyle Tullis paycheck never seemed to be the most important thing to him. I realized that one day when I was thanking him for helping a student, his eyes shone as he said to me, “Ive got so much money that I dont know what to do with it. So, I just give it away.” Most people wouldnt have thought that way. Dr. Tullis drove one of the oldest cars on campus. It was even older than almost any of the students cars. His home, while comfortable, was not fancy at all. But Lyle Tullis lived with the feeling that he had so much money that he needed to give it away. He was one of the favorite on campus. Cynics(憤世嫉俗) might say he bought fame. But they would misunderstand. Lyle wanted to devote his life, all of it, to helping others25. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?A. Dr. Tullis was very popular with his students. B. The author was wondering why Dr. Tullis gave students money.C. Dr. Tullis was generous in giving his students financial help. D. The author had a program of providing cross-cultural experiences for students.26. Why did Dr. Tullis give his money away?A. He had a good fortune. B. He wanted to buy fame.C. He was ready to help students in need. D. He didnt know where to put it away.27. We can learn from the text that . A. Dr. Tullis was very content with his low pay B. Dr. Tullis cared little about his family C. the author felt confused about Dr. Tullis generosity D. many people would misunderstand Dr. Tullis28. Which of the following can best describe Dr. Tullis? A. Honest. B. Generosity C. Friendly D. ConservativeC Twice in the past few days, Ive witnessed families arguing to the point of having major “falling outs” (when you get so angry with each other that there is threat of withdrawing love from a family member and/or abandoning the relationship). Last night, one of those situations occurred and a friend contacted me on QQ and asked my advice. Their situation arose where a son-in-law had disagreements with his wife and then got into a quarrel with his mother-in-law and father-in-law. In the end, the son-in-law threatened to cut off all relationship with his in laws and also to deny his in laws a relationship with his own daughter, their granddaughter. The first question my friend asked me was, “Michael, what do you do when you get into a quarrel with your family?” I said, “I dont know.” They said, “Well what about when you quarrel with your mother or one of your siblings (brothers or sisters)?” I said, “I dont know.” He said, “Well, what would you do if you got into an argument with your in laws when you were married?” I said, “I dont know.” He said, “What do you mean that you dont know?” I said, “Well, I never got into a quarrel with my in-laws, my mother or my siblings.” He said, “Be serious, Michael. I need some help with this situation.” I said, “I am serious. I never quarreled with mother, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law or brother-in-law. At least not in my adult life (since I turned 18 years old).” My friend found it hard to believe that I never did any of these things. I suppose (I really dont know; Ha!) that many people wouldnt believe that an entire family could maintain such a level of peace, harmony, respect and love. The truth is, my family doesnt do those things. You may wonder “why” we dont do that. Well, I never really thought about “why” we dont do that. But I do know, we dont. So, I did the most logical thing I could think of. I asked my mother “why” we dont quarrel, argue, fight and have such situations. Some people believe that if you dont argue, quarrel and fight, then, you dont care enough. I would say that my family cares very deeply for each other and love each other and express our love to each other, very often. We dont believe that you have to quarrel, argue and fight in order to show that you care and that you love the other. Instead, we show that we love, care and respect each other by, well, loving, caring and respecting each other.29. What can we infer from the passage? A. The writer doesnt care his family.B. The writer has cultural differences with his friends. C. The writer often quarrels with his family member.D. The writer knows why their family dont quarrel.30. How did the quarrel mentioned in the passage happen? A. The son-in-law had disagreements with his wife. B. The son-in-law had disagreements with his in laws.C. The son-in-law had disagreements with his daughter. D. The son-in-law threatened to cut off relationships with his in laws.31. How many questions did the friend ask the writer? A. 2. B. 3. C. 4. D. 5.32. How do the members in the writers family live in harmonious? A. By quarrelling with each other. B. By showing love, care, and respect to each other. C. By living together with each other. D. By giving gifts to each other.DName: Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital CameraList Price: $39.99Price: $ 34.99 (on Childrens Day only)Product Features:Kid-Tough and built to survive drop, after drop, after drop.Features easy and child friendly controls.Features: 1.44 TFT colored screen, inbuilt memory that stores over 2,000 pictures, 0.3 mega pixel imager, 4x digital zoom.Enhanced imager for good low light performance.Four batteries needed.Add fun special effects with downloadable software.
