1、Unit 4 Pygmalion,Do you know the myth of Pygmalion? It is a Greek myth.,Pygmalion was a very gifted artist(sculpter),who doesnt like women.However , he spent a long time creating a perfect stone statue of a beautiful woman. It was so beautiful that he couldnt help loving it and wanted it to be his w

2、ife.,But it was only a stone. How could he make his dream become true? He thought and thought and at last he asked the Greek Goddess to help him to bring it to life.The Greek Goddess agreed to help and make his dream come true by turning the stone statue into a real woman. The two are married and li

3、ve happily together.,The Greek myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights. Based on the classical myth, Bernard Shaw wrote a famous play Pygmalion.,My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaws Pygmalion. The musicals 1956 Broadway production was a smash hit, settin

4、g a new record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It has been called “the perfect musical”.,My Fair Lady,George Bernard Shaw,an Irish dramatist, literary critic, and a leading figure in the 20th century theater,His main works include:,Immaturity Widowers Houses P

5、ygmalion Man and Superman (1902), John Bulls Other Island (1904), Major Barbara (1905),George Bernard Shaw was a freethinker, defender of womens rights, and advocate of equality of income. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Shaw accepted the honor but refused the money. He was a

6、very humorous playwright.,Pygmalion,Reading,Professor Higgins is a man who does not like woman and is very rude to them. For a bet he agrees to teach a poor young woman (Eliza) so that she can be passed off as a rich lady in high class society. Eliza becomes accepted as a member of the upper class.,
