History

Theparkopenedin1961asasmalltouristattractionbytheRobinsbrothersfrom

BlowingRock,NorthCarolina,named"RebelRailroad",featuringasteamtrain,

generalstore,blacksmithshop,andsaloon.InthespiritoftheCivilWarcentennial

visitorscouldridethetrainandexperienceanattackbyUnionsoldiers.Thetrainand

itsriderswereprotectedbyConfederateswhofoughtofftheattack,thusthename

"RebelRailroad".TheparkwasmodeledaftertheRobinsborthers*firstsuccessful

themepark,TweetsieinBlowingRock.In1970,RebelRailroadwasrenamed

"GoldrushJunction"whenitwasboughtbyArtModell,whoalsoownedthe

ClevelandBrownsfootballteam.In1976,JackandPeteHerschendboughtGoldrush

Junctionandrenamedit"Goldrush"forthe1976season.In1977,theyrenamedit

"SilverDollarCityTennessee"asasisterparktotheiroriginalSilverDollarCityin

Branson,Missouri.

In1986,DollyPartonbecameaco-owner,andtheparkwasrenamed

"Dollywood".In2010,Partonsaidshebecameinvolvedwiththeoperationbecause,

"IalwaysthoughtthatifImadeitbigorgotsuccessfulatwhatIhadstartedouttodo,

thatIwantedtocomebacktomypartofthecountryanddosomethinggreat,

somethingthatwouldbringalotofjobsintothisarea."

Dollywoodhas3,000peopleonitspayroll,makingitthelargestemployerinthat

community.

From1986to2010,theparkdoubledinsizeto150acres(0.61km2).In2009,

theparkhadasixpercentdeclineinattendance,whichaparkspokesmanattributedto

badweather,althoughmanyotherthemeparksintheUnitedStatessuffered

attendancedropsthatyear,asoftenhappenstorelativelyhigh-pricedtourist

attractionsinrecessions.Asof2010,pricesforadmissiontotheparkwere$56for

adultsand$45forchildren.

OnNovember16,2010,Dollywoodearnedtheindustry'smostprestigiousaward,

theLisebergApplauseAward,whichwasacceptedbyDollyPartonduringa

ceremonyatIAAPAAttractionsExpo2010inOrlando.

Partonsaidin2010thatshewouldliketoopenmoreDollywoodparksinthe

future."Wedefinitelywanttoexpandwithnewthingseveryyear,eventuallywitha

resort,"shesaid,"WemayeventuallyhaveDollywoodsinotherpartsofthecountry,

wherewecankindofbetruetowhatever!sgoingoninthatpartoftheworld."

1987:TheDaydreamRidgeareaopens,featuringtheMountainSlidewinderwater

tobogganride;MountainDan'sBurgerHouse;SweetDreamsCandyShop;The

RainbowFactoryblownglassshop;andtheCritterCreekPlayground.

1988:The1,739-seatCelebrityTheaterisconstructedadjacenttotheentranceofthe

park.Thetheaterfeaturesthe"ShowcaseofStars"celebrityconcertseries.Fivenew

children'sridesareaddedtotheFunCountryarea,includingaZamperlaBalloon

Race.TheDollywoodFoundationisestablishedtoprovidebooksandschools

suppliesforthechildrenofSevierCounty.

1989:ThunderExpress,asteelminetraincoaster,isbuiltadjacenttoBlazingFury.

TheridehadbeenrelocatedtotheparkfromSixFlagsOverMid-America.1989is

thefinalseasonfortheNationalMountainMusicFestival,whichhadbeencarried

overfromtheSilverDollarCityyears.

1990:A1903AntiqueDentzelCarousel,originallybuiltforRockySpringsParkin

Lancaster,Pennsylvania,isrelocatedtothepark.Situatednearthetraindepot,ittakes

overthespacepreviouslyoccupiedbytheSilverDollarSaloon.The600-seatGaslight

TheateropensneartheCarousel.TheSmokyMountainChristmasFestivalpremiers

inNovember,extendingthepark'soperatingseasonintoDecember.

1991:EagleMountainSanctuary,anoutdooraviaryisadded.AlsonewistheWings

ofAmericaTheater,featuringtheBirdsofPreyshow,andthe300-seatValleyTheater.

1992:TheShowstreetareaisadded,featuringtheShowstreetPalaceTheater;The

ButterflyEmporium;TheBackstageRestaurant;TheSpotlightBakery;theFriendship

Gardens;andWDLY-FM;aworkingradiostation.Toaccommodatetheexpansion,

thepark'smainentranceismovedfromRivertownJunctiontoShowstreet.The

BarnwoodTheaterisconvertedintoImaginationStation;aninteractivechildren'splay

area.1992isthefirstseasonDollywood'sannualattendancetops2million.

1993:TheFunCountryareaisrenovatedintoTheCountryFair,featuringthreenew

rides:TheWonderWheel,a60ft(18m)tallFerriswheel;TwistandShout,a

"Scrambler"ride;andtheTennesseeTwister,atilt-a-whirl.TheBalloonRacerideis

relocatedtotheDaydreamRidgeareatomakeroomforthenewattractions.Alsonew

attheparkthisseasonisthe"SunsetMusicfest",asummermusicfestival.

1994:TheGaslightTheaterbecomestheHeartsongTheater,featuring"Heartsong",a

multi-mediamusicalpresentationthattellsthestoryofDollyParton'slife.

1995:TheJukeboxJunction1950s*'MainStreet"themedareaisadded,featuring

Rockin*Roadway(miniaturecarride),ThePinesTheater,Red'sDiner,andCas

WalkefsMusicStore.TheSunsetMusicfestdoesnotreturnforthe1995season.

1996:TheDollywoodBoulevardareaisadded,featuring"ThunderRoad",a

turbo-simulatorridebaseduponthe1958movieofthesamename.Theareaalso

featuredtheSilverScreenCafe;a1950scinemathemedrestaurant,andthe

Centerstagegiftshop.

1997:"UPickNick"，achildren'sshowfeaturingthemesfromtheNickelodeon

televisionnetwork,playsintheCelebrityTheaterduringthesummer.TheFlooded

Minedark-rideisclosedanddemolishedinOctober.TheSilverScreenCafeis

1998:DaredevilFalls,anewshootthechutesflumeride,opensinareaformerly

occupiedbytheFloodedMine.Atthetimeofitsopening,itwasbilledas"The

HighestandFastestWaterfallrideinAmerica"featuringa62ft(19m)drop.Thunder

ExpressisclosedinSeptember,removedfromthepark,andsoldtotheMagicSprings

ThemeParkinArkansas.Theantiquecarouselisremovedattheendoftheseasonand

replacedbyanewChanceRidescarousel.

1999:TheTennesseeTornado;asteelloopingcoaster,opensintheareaformerly

occupiedbyThunderExpress.AlsonewistheSouthernGospelMuseumandHallof

Fame.TheBalloonRacerideisremovedfromthepark.

2000:TheDaydreamRidgeareaisrenovatedintoDreamlandForest,achildren's

"Mountain"themedinteractivechildren'sarea.

2001:TheFestivalofNationsinternationalfestivalpremiersinApril.Dolly'sSplash

Country,anew25-acre(100,000m2)waterpark,isopenedadjacenttoDollywood's

parkinglot.

2002:DollywoodBoulevardisrenovatedintoanewarea,AdventuresinImagination.

TheSmokyMountainWildernessAdventure;anewsimulatorfilm,replacesThunder

Road.ChasingRainbows,anewDollymuseum,opensinthebuildingformerly

occupiedbyDJPlatters.

2003:Kidsfest,asummerchildren'sfestival,premiers.ImaginationStationis

convertedintoCelebrationHall,aspecialeventsfacility.2003isthefinalseasonfor

the"ShowcaseofStars"celebrityconcertseries.

2004:Anewareaofthepark,"ThunderheadGap",opensfeaturingtheThunderheada

woodenrollercoaster.Theconstructionofthenewareaopensupanewvalleyforthe

parktoexpandinto.TheCountryFairFallslogflumeisdemolishedinNovember.

MostoftheotherCountryFairrides,includingtheSwingamajig,TheTennessee

Twister,TheConvoy,andTheBarnstormer,areremovedattheendoftheseasonto

freeupspacefornewerrides.

2005:TheCountryFairareaisrenovatedtoinclude10newrides:DizzyDisk,the

degree,85ft(26m)drop,aheartlineroll,andadiveloop,wasbuilt.The$17

million-dollarrideisheavilythemedasanoldabandonedmineshaft.InNovember,

theoriginalentranceroadtothethemepark'sparkinglotonDollywoodLaneis

permanentlyclosedtothepublic.AllcarsnowentertheparkinglotoffVeteran's

BoulevardviaMcCarterHollowRoad.

2008:RiverBattle,aninteractivewaterraftride,isbuiltinanewsectionofthepark

called"WildernessPass**thatconnectstheTimberCanyonandCraftsmen'sValley

areas."ThunderRoad"returnstothemotiontheater,(nowcalledthe"Imagination

Cinema")replacingSmokyMountainWildernessAdventure.Della'sLyeSoapshopis
