embracinggenerativeAI,whichisreflectedinanuptickininvestmentlevels.Thevastmajority(80%)oforganizationsinoursurveyhaveincreasedtheirinvestmentingenerativeAIfrom2023,20%havemaintainedtheirinvestmentlevel,andnotoneorganizationdecreasedtheirinvestmentfromlastyear.Largerenterprisesleadthecharge,andoverall,
nearlyone-quarter(24%)oforganizationshaveintegratedthistechnologyintosomeormostoftheiroperations,an

sectors.Forexample,inretail,implementationincreasedto40%,morethandoublingfrom17%in2023.

permeatesorganizations,catalyzingashiftinoperationalparadigms.Inthepastyear,therehasbeenanincreasein
itsadoptionacrossallorganizationaldomains,fromsalesandmarketingtoIT,operations,R&D,finance,andlogistics.
Moreover,generativeAIadoptionamongemployeesisrobustinmostorganizations,withthemajorityallowingitsuse.Only3%ofsurveyedorganizationsenforceacompletebanon

weexploredthetransformativepotentialofgenerativeAI,highlightingthefunction-andsector-
specificusecaseswiththegreatestpotential,andcomparingadoptionratesacrosssectors.Inour2023research,we
discoveredthat,whilestillinitsinfancyintermsofscaled
adoptionandimplementation,generativeAIwasonthe
agendain96%ofboardroomsglobally.Wefoundthatnearly60%oforganizationssaidtheirleadersarestrongadvocatesofgenerativeAI,andonly39%weretakinga“wait-and-
watch”approach.

investment,whiletheremaining20%maintainedthesameinvestmentlevel.Thistrendechoesacrossallsectorsandorganizationsizesintheresearch.Forexample:
?Inaerospaceanddefense,almostninein10organizationshave(88%)boostedtheirinvestmentingenerativeAI;
?Withinretail,thelowestproportionamongallsectorsinoursurvey,66%haveinvestedingenerativeAI;
?73%oforganizationswith$1–5billioninannual
revenuehaveincreasedtheirinvestment,and89%oforganizationswithover$20billioninrevenuehave
doneso.
DaveChen,HeadofGlobalTechnologyInvestmentBankingatMorganStanley,says:“Thoughcostsavingsandoperationalefficienciesremainapriorityforlargeenterprises,theyarealsoshowingawillingnesstospend,especiallyongenerativeAIandtraditionalAIhardwareandsoftwarethatmay[inthemediumtolongterm]helpreducecostsandincreaseproductivityandrevenue.”1Recently,TheCoca-ColaCompanycommitted
$1.1billionoverafive-yearperiodtoacceleratecloudandgenerativeAIinitiatives.2

Inthepastyear,
implementationofgenerativeAIhasaccelerated
Acrossourtotalsurveysampleof1,100organizations,
only6%oforganizationsareyettobeginexploring
generativeAI.Outofthosewhohaveatleastbeguntodoso(n=1,031),nearlyone-quarter(24%)arenowintegratingthistechnologyintosomeormostoftheirlocationsor
functions.Thismarksanincreasefromjust6%reportedlastyear,indicatingwidespreadrecognitionofthebenefits(seeFigure1).
Only10%ofsmallerorganizationsinourresearch,
withannualrevenueof$1–5billion,haveimplementedgenerativeAIacrosssomeormostoftheirlocations
andfunctions.Incontrast,49%oforganizationswith
annualrevenuesurpassing$20billionhaveimplementedthetechnology.
JackForestell,ChiefProductandStrategyOfficeratVisa,says:“WhilemuchofgenerativeAIsofarhasbeenfocusedontasksandcontentcreation,thistechnologywillsoonnotonlyreshapehowweliveandwork,butitwillalsomeaningfully
changecommerceinwayswehaveyettofullyunderstand.”3

providepersonalizedoffers.”5MichaelSmith,ChiefInformationOfficeratTheEstéeLauderCompanies,says:“ThegenerativeAIchatbotdevelopedwith[apartner]helpsusquicklyfind
productsthataddressconcernsrelevanttospecificregionsandemergingmarkets.Wewillcontinuetoexploreotherwayswe
canharnessthewealthofdataacrossproducts,ingredients,andmore,intandemwiththepowerofgenerativeAI.”6
HighlightingthegradualscalingofgenerativeAIinfinancialservices,AsimTewary,formerChiefAIOfficer,PayPal,
comments:"Youhavetobeabletoexplainwhycertaindecisionsweremade—whyacreditlimitwassetatthatamount,for
example.There’sanabsolutenessthat’sexpectedfromregulatorsaboutbeingabletoexplainhowthedecisionwasmade.Anytimeyouimpacttheconsumerorintroduceasystemrisk,regulators
getveryconcerned.”Alsoconcerningtothefinancialsectoristheincreasedsophisticationofdeepfakeswhichcandeceivecustomersintotransferringfundstoseeminglylegitimate
accounts,whethervirtualorhumanagentmimicked.This
underscorestheimperativeofensuringbothaccuracyin
customer-facingAIproductsandrobustsecuritymeasuresincustomerinteractions.7

InvestmentingenerativeAIincreaseswithorganization
Onaverage,organizationssurveyedhave
allocatedaround$110milliontogenerativeAIforthecurrentfiscalyear.Thirty-fourpercentoforganizationsinoursurveyhaveallocated$50millionorlesstogenerativeAI,while11%haveallocated$250millionormore.
TheamountofgenerativeAIinvestmentincreaseswithcompanysize.Forexample,onaverage,
organizationswithannualrevenueof$1–5billionallocate$85millionandthosewithmorethan$20billionallocate$158million(seeFigure3).
Giventhattheamountofinvestmentallocated
togenerativeAIincreaseswithorganizationsize,largerorganizationswidelyagreethatgenerativeAIismorethanjustapassingtrend,servingasa
pivotalcornerstoneintheirenterpriseevolution.Largeorganizationsareincreasinglyembracing
thetransformativepotentialofgenerativeAI
technologymoreferventlythanperhapsother
recenttechnologicaladvancement.Astriking71%oforganizationswithannualrevenuesexceeding
size
$20billionbelievethatfailingtoadoptgenerative
AIwillplacethemataconsiderabledisadvantage
relativetotheircompetitors.Thissentimentisloweramongorganizationswithannualrevenuesunder$5billion(56%)8.
Ouraverageinvestmentof$110millionishigherthansomerecentlypublishedanalystreportsandlikely
reflectsthebroadcategoriesofenterprisespendincludinghardware,software,licensing,training,
amongothers.AccordingtoGartner,software
developmentisthefunctionwiththehighestrateofinvestmentingenerativeAI,followedcloselybymarketingandcustomerservice.8Additionally,a
significantmajorityoforganizationsareinvestinginpartnershipswithexternalprovidersofgenerativeAIapplications.Accordingtoourresearch,70%
oforganizationsareexclusivelyusingexternalapplicationsoracombinationofexternaland
in-housesolutions.Commonlyusedtoolsinclude
OpenAI’sChatGPT,GitHubCopilot,Scribe,MicrosoftCopilot,andAWSGenAI.

regulatetheuseofgenerativeAI,unauthorizedusageamongemployeesisstillrelativelycommon.Amongthe39%of
organizationswithabanorlimitationpolicy,halfofthemsaythereisstillunauthorizedusageofgenerativeAIinthe
