BeliefintheValueofaCollegeDegreeAnewnationalsurveyofyoungadultsage18to25fromthenonprofit,nonpartisanopinionresearchorganizationPublicAgendafindsthatthevastmajorityoftodaysyoungadults—theAfricanAmerican,HispanicorLatino,AsianAmericanorwhite—stronglybelieveinthevalueofhighereducation.MostoftheyoungadultssurveyedinLifeAfterHighSchool:YoungPeopleTalkaboutTheirHopesandProspectsreportthattheirparentsinspiredthegoalofgoingtocollegeandmosthadateacherinhighschoolwhotookastrongpersonalinterestinthemandencouragedthemtogoontocollege.
YoungPeopleHaveStrongBeliefinCollegeEducationAcrossracialandethniclines,youngAmericansseegoingtocollegeasapositivethingtodo.Threeinfour(74%)youngadultsagreethatcollegehelpsprepareyoufortherealworld.77%ofAfricanAmericans,81%ofHispanics,85%ofAsianAmericansand81%ofwhitessaidthat“peoplerespectyoumorewhentheyknowyouvegraduatedfromcollege.〞Thesefindingscounterthebeliefofsomethatlargenumbersofminorityyouthdespiseacademicsuccess.Only7%ofyoungAfricanAmericansand3%ofyoungHispanicssurveyedsaythatgraduatingfromcollegeissomethingtheircircleoffriendslooksdownon.Butthesurveyconfirmswhatnationaldatashows—goingtocollegeisstillnotcommonplaceformostAfricanAmericansandHispanics.TheAfricanAmericansandHispanics(8%each)surveyedwerelesslikelytohaveearnedabachelorsdegreethantheirAsianAmerican(25%)andwhite(16%)peers.Substantialnumbersbelievetheirhighschoolteachersandclassesshouldhavedonealotmoretopreparethemforcollegelevelwork(51%AfricanAmerican,48%Hispanic,44%AsianAmericanand39%white).Buttheyalsoholdthemselvesaccountableforpoorpreparation.69%ofAfricanAmericans,75%ofHispanics,70%ofAsianAmericansand65%ofwhitesadmitthattheythemselves“couldhavepaidalotmoreattentionandworkedharder〞inhighschool.
PositiveViewsEncouragedtheKidstoGotoCollegeParentsseemtobeprimemoversforgettingkidstogotocollege.About6in10saidthattheirparentsstronglyexpectedthemtogotocollege(61%ofAfricanAmericans,59%ofHispanics,86%ofAsianAmericansand63%ofwhites).Majoritiesofallgroupspointtoaparentastheonepersonwhohasbeenthemostimportantinfluenceontheirdecisionsonissueslikeworkandcollege.Intermsofinspiration,teachers,coachesandotheradultmentorsalsocomeinforsomehighmarks.74%ofAfricanAmericans,69%ofHispanics,63%ofAsianAmericansand66%ofwhitessaidtheyhadahighschoolteacherwhotookapersonalinterestinthemandencouragedthemtogotocollege.Similarmajoritiessaidtheyhadateacherorcoachwhoreallyinspiredthemtodotheirbest.Asforhighschoolcounselors,theyoungpeopleacrossalldemographicgroupssurveyedindicatedthatcounselingresourceswerestretchedthin,with53%sayingtherewerenotenoughcounselorsintheirhighschool.Abouthalf(52%)saidtheirschoolcounselorsusuallymadeanefforttogetto

DifferentViewsAlmost9in10(89%)agreedthat“collegeisnotforeveryone〞andasolidmajority(57%)agreedthat“earningmoneyinsteadofsittinginaclassroom〞canbeanadvantage.ButLifeAfterHighSchoolraisesseriousquestionsaboutthefutureofyoungadultswithnocollegedegree.Comparedtothosewitheithera2or4yeardegree,thisgroupislesshappywiththeirworksituationandlessfocusedonplanningafuture.Just1in5oftheselesseducatedyoungadultssaidtheylovetheirjob,comparedwith31%ofthosewithdegrees.7in10withlimitededucationsaidtheyareintheircurrentjobmorebychancethanbydesign,comparedto56%ofyoungworkerswithdegrees.Lackofparentalencouragementseemstoplayabigrole.Bya30pointmargin,youngworkerswithlesseducationarelesslikelythanthemoreeducatedtosaytheirparentsstronglyexpectedthemtogotocollege(32%vs.67%).Bya22pointmargintheyarelesslikelytopointtoaparentastheirnumberonesourceofguidance(47%vs.69%).Thosewithoutcollegedegreesaremorelikelytosaytheycouldhaveworkedharderinschool(78%ofthelesseducatedsaidthiscomparedto62%withdegrees).Whileconventionalwisdommayholdthatthosewithoutcollegedegreesdidnthavementorsinhighschool,majoritiessaidtheydid,infact,haveahighschoolteacherorcoachwhotookaninterestandinspiredthem.
DifferencesaboutEducationRelatedtoMenandWomenThisresearchsuggeststhatyoungwomenhaveinternalizedtheworthofpostsecondaryeducationmorethanyoungmenhave.Youngmenaremorelikelytosaytheydidntattendorcompletecollegebecausethey“hadenoughofschool〞(32%vs.22%ofyoungwomen),andweremorelikelytosaytheydidntcompleteadditionaleducationbecausetheypreferredtoworkandmakemoney(56%vs.42%).Incontrast,7in10(69%)youngwomenwhowenttocollegesaidthey“reallyenjoybeinginschool〞,whereasasignificantlysmallermajorityofyoungmen(58%)whowenttocollegesaidthesamething.
Summary:Hopes,InspirationandTradeoffsPerhapsthemosthearteningmessagefromLifeAfterHighSchoolisthatthevastmajorityoftodaysyoungadults—acrossracialandethniclines—believethathighereducationisawaytoearnbothsocietysrespectandinsurethecareeradvancementandfinancialsecuritytheyyearnfor.Accordingtotheyoungadultsthemselves,parentsarethemostimportantadultswhoinspirethemtogetahighereducation.Pointedly,thoseyoungpeoplewhodontcontinueonafterhighschoolaremuchlesslikelytosaytheirparentsexpectedthemtogotocollegeorthattheirparentsaretheirmostimportantsourceofguidance.ThefindingsindicatethatAfricanAmericanandHispanicyoungpeoplearefarmorelikelythantheirwhitepeerstosaytheyhadtocompromiseontheirchoiceofcollegeduetofinancialconstraints.Finally,thereportstates“fewwoulddenythatmanyindividualsshapeconstructive,honorableandsatisfyingliveswithouthighereducation,andthereisausefuldebateaboutwhetherallyoungpeopleneedorwilleventoleratemoreschoolingafterhighschool.Evenso,itisworthaskinghowcomfortablewearewiththehaphazard,letthechipsfallwheretheymaycareerpathsomanyyoungpeoplewhoarentincollegeseemtobepursuing.〞[1160words]
