WhoisheWildwasaswashbuckling(傳奇的)attention-grabber.Hewasfamousastheleaderofthelate-Victoriandecadentaestheticism.HispoetryiscommonplaceascomparedwithhisfellowwriterslikeDowsonandJohnson.Hisplaysarehumorous,clever,butlackingindepth.Wildewasfirstlyaplaywrightofcomedies.Thoughhedidnotlivelongenoughtobringhisdramaticpowersintofullplays,hisachievementinthefieldofcomedyisbynomeansnegligible.HisplaysLadyTindermere’sFan(1892),AWomanofNoImportance(1893),

AnIdealHusband(1895),andTheImportanceofBeingEarnest(1895)allenjoyedamazingpopularityinhistime.ItisgoodtoaddthatWildewroteagoodnumberofshortstories,onesizeablecollectionofwhichistheHappyPrinceandOtherTales.Theonenovelhewrote,The

PictureofDorianGray(1891),isworthmentioningbecauseittouchesuponatypicalVictoriansubject,thedividedself.Themaincharacterofthenovel,DorianGray,isahandsomeyoungmanofmeans.hevisitedhisartistfriendBasilHallward’sstudioandisfansinatedwiththeportraitBasilispainting.Itishispicture,asyoungandhandsomeasheis.Doriansecuresthepictureandlocksitawayinaroomupstairs.Hewishesthatthepicturecouldbearalltheburdenofhissinsandhisaginginsteadofhimself.HemeetsLordHenryWotton,whoprovestobehismentorofdepravedlife.Doriancontinuestoindulgeindissipation,andthepicturebecomesuglierwithtime.AtlastDoringlosespatiencewiththeincreasinglywithered,wrinkledfaceonthepicture,anddecidestodestroyit.Hestabitthroughwithaknife,andhearsadeathlyscreamfromhimself.Whenhisservantscome,theyfindthedeadbodyoftheirmasterwithafaceexactlylikethatonthepicture.Thepictureofdoriangrayhasacpuireditsownentityandhasbeenseenasanauthenticnarrativeonthenotionofthedouble,thesplitofnatureofthehumansoulandhumanexistencethatcharacterizesVictorianlifeinasense.AnotherthingtonoteaboutthebookisitsprefaceinwhichWildestatesinhistypicalaphoristicmannerthatartisseparatefrommoralityandnottobewellorbadlywritten.Thushemanagestomakethetheoryofartforart’ssakefurtherclear.Heassertionoftheimportanceofformthattheprefaceemphasizeshasbeengraduallydigestedandacceptedbylatergeneratio
