nucleusaccumbens)fromtheassessmentofitsprice(associatedwiththeinsularcortex),even

thoughthetwoarethensynthesisedintheprefrontalcortex.Hishypothesisisthatratherthan

weighingthepresentgoodagainstfuturealternatives,asorthodoxeconomicssuggestshappens,

peopleactuallybalancetheimmediatepleasureoftheprospectivepossessionofaproductwiththe

immediatepainofpayingforit.

Thatmakesperfectsenseasanevolvedmechanismfortrading.Ifoneusefulobjectisbeingtraded

foranother(hardcashinmoderntime),thefutureutilityofwhatisbeinggivenupisembeddedin

theobjectbeingtraded.Emotionisascapableofassigningsuchavalueasreason.Buyingon

credit,though,maybedifferent.Theabstractnatureofcreditcards,coupledwiththedefermentof

paymentthattheypromise,maymodulatethe"con”sideofthecalculationinfavourofthe"pro”.
