Now we are learning that its not just laughter. Having fun and playing are also good for us! Researchers have found that play is good for people of all ages. Play actually leads to the growth of more nerve connections in the brain and gives us more brain power. Play is necessary during childhood. As children play, they learn how to make friends and relate to others. They develop their imaginations and become more creative. Kids carry these qualities with them as they grow older. Amy Whitcomb teaches maths at a school in San Francisco. For several years, she has used games to teach maths. In one class, students play a game with small bags of candy to figure out how many pieces in the bags are red. When they get the correct answer, they can eat the candy! Amy says, If its not fun, theyre not going to want to be there. Theyre not going to want to learn. The spirit of playfulness continues through the teenage years into adulthood (成人期). The famous company Google, for example, keeps a lot of toys and games at different places in their offices and encourages people to use them. Their motto is Work hard. Play hard. They know that people often get their best ideas when they are just playing around and let their imaginations go wild. So next time you have to solve a difficult maths problem or cant think of a topic for an article, take a short play break. Do a little dance, or play a quick game. Then come back to it. Maybe youll be surprised at what your brain can do.21. Some people are born planners. I cant claim (宣稱) to be one of that kind of people. Most of the time, I try to at least expect what might go wrong. I have taken to making lists and, although Im not yet achieving perfection, I usually manage to achieve goals. But there are times when even the best plans do not succeed. All that is left then is to smile and to make or do something using whatever is found.Hanukkah (光明節(jié)) came early this year, perhaps too soon after Thanksgiving to allow us to prepare well. During the first night of Hanukkah, the Hanukkah candles were nowhere to be found in the entire Dallas area where we lived. Birthday candles wouldnt work! The tall long thin candle fell in small drops. “What would our ancestors do?” I thought. “What shall I do now? Thats where ingenuity comes from. Dont be nervous and worried. Never let missing candles spoil a family celebration.” Later what we did find was a bag of tea lights. The long, silver bread tray became the base for our tea lights. The younger ones were wide-eyed and happy as Grandpa lit the first tea light and all recited the blessing. We sat at the dining table, happy to be together and the food was plentiful. No matter how imperfect it is, the fact that families gather to share a special event, an event that has held meaning for so many generations of families, is the meaning itself and forms the important part of the observance (儀式). What we need to remember, and to carry with us, is the knowledge that togetherness is much better than all other concerns.25. The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) holds events for competitive eating all around the world. One of the most popular contests (競賽) is held every 4th of July on Coney Island in New York. Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest started in 1916 and the event has been dominated (占據(jù)優(yōu)勢) by Takeru Kobayashi. The Japanese competitor set his first record in 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes and has won the contest six years in a row.The main types of food eaten in the contests are fast food. Hot dogs, chicken wings, pickles, corndogs and pizza are main foods of the contests. The contests usually last from around 8 to 12 minutes. Now most of the competitors are men, but there are also women who take part in competitive eating.Being large and overweight isnt necessarily an advantage in competitive eating. The biggest advantage a competitor can have is the ability to actually stretch (擴(kuò)張) their stomach. Many competitors will drink plenty of water over a period of time in order to achieve this. Apart from having an unusually stretchable stomach, another important thing seems to be hand to mouth speed. The IFOCE has very strict safety guidelines laid out regarding competitive eating. Competitions must take place in a controlled area and only competitors over the age of 18 are allowed to enter. They also advise against any type of home training. There has been much talk regarding the inclusion of competitive eating as an Olympic sport. Although the IFOCE has talked about that with the Olympic committee, it seems that they will not agree to it at present.29. Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest _.A. has a history of over 200 years B. takes place once a year inJapanC. is becoming less popular than before D. has made Takeru Kobayashi famous30. The disadvantages of eating too much.32. Whats the main purpose of the text?A. To report. B. To advertise. C. To introduce. D. To warn.DThe mind of an elephant should not beunderestimated. They are intelligent animals born with both excellent memory and artistic talent. Elephants eat about 495 pounds of vegetarian food a day. They spend about 16 hours a day eating, but must walk about 4 miles a day in search of food. The average (通常的) elephant lives about 70 years, and its sharp memory allows it to remember places where it has found food as long as 30 years earlier, even as a baby.In an elephants travels, it comes across other elephants also looking for food. Some elephants are friendly, and some are not so nice. Elephants remember every elephant they have ever met. They can even recognize an elephant they perhaps havent seen for 30 years. They immediately remember whether this elephant is an enemy or a friend. When elephants are not searching for food, they sometimes produce art in the sand with their trunks (象鼻). They seem to enjoy just relaxing and painting in the sand. One day, an elephant zoo-keeper noticed this and gave an elephant a paint brush filled with red paint to see if the elephant would paint on a canvas (畫布). Sure enough, it did, and since then elephants in most zoos have been given paint brushes, paints, and canvases. The resulting abstract (抽象的) art has been sold for high prices around the world. The money goes to support feeding the elephants in the zoos. Most felt that the elephants were only capable of painting abstracts. However, they have been trained to paint trees, flowers, and other things in nature. This has enabled us to understand “elephant genius (天才)”even more.33. What does the underlined word “underestimated” mean?A. Underdeveloped. B. Undervalued. C. Mistaken. D. Controlled.34. Why did the zoo-keeper give the elephant a brush?A. To attract visitors to it. B. To train it to paint pictures.C. To prove it was a born artist. D. To find out whether it could draw.35. Which can best describe elephants according to the text?A. Highly smart. B. Unusually quiet.C. Really brave. D. Extremely friendly.第二節(jié)(共5小題,每小題2分,滿分10分)Building Trust in a Relationship AgainTrust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences36That is a risk. But you cant be successful when theres a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake.Unfortunately, weve all been victims of betrayal(背叛). Whether weve been suffering, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply cant trust anymore.37Its understandable, but if youre willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.38Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.39If youve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But theres a difference between being a victim and living with a victim mentality. At some point in all of our lives, well have our trust tested or violated. You didnt lose everything. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40Instead, its a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.A. Learn to really trust yourself.B. It is putting confidence in someone.C. Stop regarding yourself as the victim.D. Remember that you can expect the best in return.E. Theyve been too badly hurt and they cant bear to let it happen again.F. This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.G.
