Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her. My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票經(jīng)紀(jì)人)I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs. Tan.” And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he dont send me check already two week long.”And then, in perfect English I said, “Im getting rather concerned. You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasnt arrived.”Then she talked more loudly. “What he want? I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I cant tolerate any more excuse. If I dont receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there redfaced, my mother, the real Mrs. Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mothers broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mothers English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.1Why was the authors mother poorly served?AShe was unable to speak good English.BShe was often misunderstood.CShe was not clearly heard.DShe was not very polite. 根據(jù)第一段的“Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly.”可知。2From Paragraph 2, we know that the author was _.Agood at pretendingBrude to the stockbrokerCready to help her motherDunwilling to phone for her mother解析:選D細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段的“I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her.”可知。3After the author made the phone call, _.Athey forgave the stockbrokerBthey failed to get the checkCthey went to New York immediatelyDthey spoke to their boss at once解析:選B推理判斷題。 根據(jù)第五段的“If I dont receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”和第六段“The next week we ended up in New York.”可知。4What does the author think of her mothers English now?AIt confuses her.BIt embarrasses her.CIt helps her understand the world.DIt helps her tolerate rude people. 根據(jù)文中最后一句“It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world. ”可知。BThese days, young people in some Englishspeaking countries are speaking a strange language, especially when communicating on social media.Look at these words chosen by The Washington Post:“David Bowie dying is totes tradge” and “When Cookie hugged Jamal it made me totes emosh”. Or this sentence:“BAE, let me know if you stay in tonight.”What on earth do they mean? Well,“totes” is a short form of “totally”. Similarly,“tradge” means “tragic” and “emosh” means “emotional”. It seems that, for millennials (千禧一代), typing in this form is not only timesaving but fashionable. As you can see, many millennial slangs (俚語) are formed by socalled “totesing” the systematic abbreviation (縮寫) of words. The trend might have started with “totally” becoming “totes”, but it now has spread to many other English words. The origins of other millennial slangs are more complex than “totesing”“Bae”, for example, has been widely used by AfricanAmericans for years. It can be an expression of closeness with ones romantic partner or, like “sweetheart”, for someone without romantic connection. After pop singer Pharrell used the word in his work,“bae” became mainstream. Some people might think millennial slangs lower the value of the English language, but Melbourne University linguist (語言學(xué)家) Rosey Billington doesnt agree. She says when people are able to use a language in a creative way, they show that they know the language rules well enough to use words differently. Two other linguists, Lauren Spradlin and Taylor Jones, share the same view. The two analysed hundreds of examples of totes speak and discovered totesing has complex roots. It isnt simply an adult version of baby talk, nor a clever way to minimize your word count. Rather, it is a highly organized system that relies on a speakers mastery of English pronunciation. It is about sounds, follows sound system of English and has strict rules. 5Why do young people like using eslangs?AThey are timeconsuming.BThey are in fashion.CThey are complex.DThey are in order. B。6Whats the authors purpose of mentioning “Bae” in Paragraph 5?ATo support that totesing is no baby talk.BTo analyse the usage of millennial slangs.CTo inform people how it became mainstream.DTo explain the complex origins of millennial slangs. D。7Which statement may Rosey Billington agree with?ATotesing is a loosely organized system.BMillennial slangs lower the value of English.CIts simply a clever way to reduce the word count.DTotesspeak requires a good command of English. D。8Whats the best title of the passage?AEslangs Catch on Among YouthBLinguists Disapprove of TotesingCMillennial Slangs Take the LeadDEnglish Has Greatly Changed解析:選A標(biāo)題歸納題。 故選A。. Learning a language can be difficult, especially for adults.
