ThreeEnglishdictionariespublishedrecentlyalllayclaimtopossessinga“newnfeature.TheBBCEnglish

Dictionarycontainsbackgroundinformationon1,000peopleandplacesprominentinthenewssince1988;

theOxfordAdvancedLearner'sDictionary:EncyclopedicEditionistheOALDplusencyclopedicentries;the

LongmanDictionaryofEnglishLanguageandCultureistheLDOCEplusculturalinformation.

Thekeyfactisthatallthreedictionariescanbeseentohaveadistinctly“cultural"aswellaslanguage

learningcontent.Thatbeingsaid,thewayinwhichtheyapproachtheculturalelementisnotidentical,

makingdirectcomparisonsbetweenthethreedifficult.

Whilethereissomecommongroundbetweentheencyclopedic/culturalentriesfortheOxfordand

Longmandictionaries,thereisacleardifference.Oxfordlaysclaimtobeingencyclopediconcontent

whereasLongmandistinctlyconcentratesonthelanguageandcultureoftheEnglishspeakingworld.The

OxforddictionarycanthereforestandmorevigorousscrutinyforculturalbiasthantheLongmanpublication

becausethelatterdoesnothesitateaboutviewingtherestoftheworldfromtheculturalperspectivesofthe

Englishspeakingworld.TheculturalobjectivesoftheBBCdictionaryareinturnmoredistinctstill.Based

onananalysisofover70millionwordsrecordedfromtheBBCWorldServiceandNationalPublicRadioof

Washingtonoveraperiodoffouryears,their1,000briefencyclopedicentriesarebasedonpeopleand

placesthathavefeaturedinthenewsrecently.Theintendedusertheyhaveinmindisaregularlistenerto

theWorldServicewhowillhaveareasonablestandardofEnglishandadevelopedskillinlistening

comprehension.

Inreality,though,theBBCdictionarywillbepurchasedbyafarwiderrangeoflanguagelearners,as

willtheothertwodictionaries.Wewillbefacedwithasituationwheremanyoftheusersofthesedictionaries

willattheveryleasthavedistinctsocioculturalperspectivesandmayhaveworldviewswhicharetotally

opposedandevenhostiletothoseoftheWest.Advancedlearnersformthiskindofbackgroundwillnotonly

evaluateadictionaryonhowuserfriendlyitisbutwillalsohavedefiniteviewsaboutthescopeand

appropriatenessofthevarioussocioculturalentries.
