PrOgrammehadbeenreplacedbytheSPaCeshuttle?.WhentheChallengerspaceshuttle
tookoffon28January1986,theworldseemedtohavelostitswonderattheamazing
achievementsoftheastronautsinvolved.Butthiswasgoingtobenoordinary
excursion,andmillionsofpeopletunedintowitnessthetake-offonTV.Itwas

specialbecauseChristaMcAuliffeaged37,anordinaryteacherandmother,wasabout
tobecomethefirstcivilian'inspace.Sheplannedtogivetwo15-minutelessons
fromorbit:thefirsttodemonstratethecontrolsofthespacecraftandexplain
howgravityworked,andthesecondtodescribetheobjectivesoftheChallenger
programme.
Tragically,sheneverreturnedtoherclassroomastheshuttleexplodedjust
overaminuteaftertakingoffinFlorida,andallsevenastronautsonboardwere
killed.Itwasthemostdisastrousspaceaccidentever,anditcastashadowon
people,shearts.
“Icanrememberthatdaysoclearly,watchingthetake-offonTVatschool,,,
saidonestudent."TherewasanordinaryteacherontheChallenger,andwewereal1
veryexcited.Wehadseenthesmilingfacesoftheastronautswavingtotheworld
astheysteppedintotheshuttle.Then,littlemorethanaminuteaftertake-off,
wesawastrangeredandorangelightinthesky,followedbyacloudofwhitesmoke.
TheChallengerhadexplodedinmid-airandweal1startedscreaming.”
