internationalwomen’sdayisachanceforallofustoshoutloudlyandtogetherinsupportofgreaterequality,whereverit’sneeded.and,since2022,thecoalitionhasbeenfocusedonmakingbritainafairersociety:whereeveryone–nomatterwhattheirgender,backgroundorcircumstances,cansucceed.

thisincludesintroducingsharedparentalleave.so,fromaprilnextyear,motherswhowanttoreturntoworkearlyafterhavingababycanandtheirpartnerswillbeabletousetheirremainingleaveandpay.we’reimprovingaccesstoaffordable,high-qualitychildcaretohelpthosefamiliesmostfeelingthesqueeze.

andwe’realsochangingthepensionsystemsothatitisfairerforwomen,andhaveintroducedataxcutthat’shelpingputmoneybackinthepocketsofmillionsofwomen.inaddition,we’reworkingtogetmorewomenintotheboardroom,andencouragingallthosefemaleentrepreneurswithagoodideatostarttheirowncompanies.

morewidely,weareworkingacrosstheworldtoensuremorewomenandgirlshavegreaterchoiceandcontrolovertheirownlives.we’rehelpingtogetmoreyounggirlsintoschool,fightingtobanishhorrificpracticessuchasfemalegenitalmutilationandworkingtoimprovewomen’saccesstojustice.

i’mdeterminedtokeepgoingfurther-bothinmyownpartyandingovernment.

that’smycommitmentforthisinternationalwomen’sdayandbeyond.together,wecanmakeadifference–locally,nationallyandglobally–ensuringeveryonehasanequalshotatthehappy,healthyandsuccessfullifethattheywant.

thisisatimewhenfamiliesandfriendsgatherroundthesedertabletorememberthestrugglesofthejewishpeopletosecuretheirfreedom.everyyear,theytellthisstorytotheirchildrensoitisneverforgotten.

andwhatthisancientjourneyshowsusistheenduringpowerofpeopletoovercomeeventhegreatestofadversityandbuildabetterfuturetogether.and,duringthiscelebration,we’reremindedofallthosepeoplestillsufferingoppression,becauseoftheirreligiousbeliefs,raceorcreed.

thatcannotberightandpassoverisachanceforallofustocommitourselvesagaintohelpingthose–ofallfaithsandnone–whofacepersecutionaroundtheworld.

today,i’mwearingmyredribbonwithprideforworldaidsday.inthelastthirtyyears,sincethefirstcasesofhivwerediscovered,we’vetravelledahugedistanceintermsofresearchandtreatment.notleastbecauseadvancesinmedicationnowmeanthat,ifdiagnosedandtreatedearlyenough,peoplelivingwithhivcanlivejustaslongaspeoplewithoutit.

intheukwe’recommittedtotacklingtheglobalimpactsofthisdisease–theambitionhastobeafuturewithzeronewinfectionsandaids-relateddeaths.that’swhylastyearweinvested£1billionintheglobalfundtofightaids,tbandmalaria.thismoneyishelpinghundredsofthousandsofpeoplearoundtheworldgetlifesavingtreatment.

but,ofcourse,thereisstillalongwaytogo.andwhilethesciencehasmovedon,toomanypeople’sattitudeshavenot.oneinthreepeoplelivingwithhivsaythattheyhaveexperienceddiscrimination,becauseoftheircondition.that’ssimplyunacceptable.so,thisworldaidsday,pleasevisit.uktogetthefactsabouthivandtellthepeopleyouknow.

it’scriticalthatpeoplehavetherightinformation,andthatthenextgeneration–throughgoodsexeducation–understandthefacts.together,bywearingyourredribbonandtweetingyoursupportusingthehashtagputaribbononit,wecanhelpbreakdownthestigmathatstillsurroundsthisconditionandshowthatthere’sjustnoplaceforthiskindofdiscriminationinmodernbritain.sopleasegetinvolved.

climatechangeisoneofthemostseriousthreatsfacingourworld.anditisnotjustathreattotheenvironment.itisalsoathreattoournationalsecurity,toglobalsecurity,topovertyeradicationandtoeconomicprosperity.

andwemustagreeaglobaldealinparisnextyear.wesimplycannotputthisoffanylonger.

andipaytributetosecretarygeneralbanforbringingeveryonetogetherheretodayandforputtingrealfocusonthisissue.

nowmycountry,theunitedkingdom,isplayingitspart.

infact,itwasmargaretthatcherwhowasoneofthefirstworldleaderstodemandactiononclimatechange,righthereattheunitednations25yearsago.

nowsincethen,theukhascutgreenhousegasemissionsbyonequarter.wehavecreatedtheworld’sfirstclimatechangeact.andasprimeminister,ipledgedthatthegovernmentileadwouldbethegreenestgovernmentever.andibelievewe’vekeptthatpromise.

we’vemorethandoubledourcapacityinrenewableelectricityinthelast4yearsalone.wenowhaveenoughsolartopoweralmostamillionukhomes.wehavetheworld’sleadingfinancialcentreincarbontrading.andwehaveestablishedtheworld’sfirstgreeninvestmentbank.we’veinvested£1billionincarboncaptureandstorage.andwe’vesaidnotoanynewcoalwithoutcarboncaptureandstorage.weareinvestinginallformsoflowercarbonenergyincludingshalegasandnuclear,withthefirstnewnuclearplantcomingonstreamforageneration.

now,asaresultofallthatwearedoing,weareontracktocutemissionsby80percentby2050.andweareplayingourroleinternationallyaswell,providingnearly£4billionofclimatefinanceover5yearsaspartofourcommitmenttospend0.7percentofourgrossnationalincomeonaid.andweareoneoftheonlycountriesintheadvancedworldtodothatandtomeetourpromises.

wenowneedthewholeworldthoughtostepuptodeliveranew,ambitious,globaldealwhichkeepsthe2degreegoalwithinreach.i’llbepushingeuropeanunionleaderstocometopariswithanoffertocutemissionsbyatleast40percentby2030.

weknowfromcopenhagenthatwearenotjustgoingtoturnupinparisandreachadeal.weneedtoworkhardnowtoraisethelevelofambitionandtoworkthroughthedifficultissues.toachieveadealweneedallcountries,allcountriestomakecommitmentstoreduceemissions.ouragreementhastobelegallybinding,withproperrulesandtargetstoholdeachothertoaccount.

wemustprovidesupporttothosewhoneedit,particularlythepoorestandmostvulnerable.itiscompletelyunrealistictoexpectdevelopingcountriestoforgothehighcarbonroutetogrowththatsomanywesterncountriesenjoyed,unlesswesupportthemtoachievegreengrowth.now,ifwegetthisrightthereneednotbeatrade-offbetweeneconomicgrowthandreducingcarbonemissions.

weneedtogivebusinessthecertaintyitneedstoinvestinlowcarbon.thatmeansfightingagainsttheeconomicallyandenvironmentallyperversefossilfuelsubsidieswhichdistortfreemarketsandripofftaxpayers.itmeanschampioninggreenfreetrade,slashingtariffsonthingslikesolarpanels.anditmeansgivingbusinesstheflexibilitytopicktherighttechnologiesfortheirneeds.

inshortweneedaframeworkbuiltongreengrowthnotgreentape.

aspoliticalleaderswehaveadutytothinklong-term.whenofferedclearscientificadvice,weshouldlistentoit.whenfacedwithrisks,weshouldinsureagainstthem.andwhenpresentedwithanopportunitytosafeguardthelong-termfutureofourplanetandourpeople,weshouldseizeit.
