MechanicsofMaterialsThermalEffects,Misfits,andPrestrainsWelcometomechanicsofmaterials.Inthepreviousstudies,stressesandstrainsinastructurewerediscussedinducedbyonlyexternalloads.However,externalloadsarenottheonlysourcesofstressesandstrains.Othersourcesincludethermaleffectsarisingfromtemperaturechanges,misfitsresultingfromimperfectionsinconstruction,andprestrainsthatareproducedbyinitialdeformations.Thermaleffects,misfits,andprestrainsarecommonlyfoundinbothmechanicalandstructuralsystemsandtheyaremuchmoreimportantinthedesignofstaticallyindeterminatestructures.Wearegoingtodiscusstheminthissection.ThermalEffects-Changesintemperatureproduceexpansionorcontractionofstructuralmaterials,resultinginthermalstrainsandthermalstresses.α
