hottest

official

weather

records

first

startedbeing

kept

by

the

British

in

about

temperatures

haveprojected

an

increase

of

asmuch

as

5°C

before

the

year2100.

Such

a

rise

in

globaltemperature

would

producenew

patterns

and

extremedrought

and

rainfall,

belt

,cripple

the

Northwhichproduces

much

of

the

world'sgrain,

leading

to

much

higherfood

prices,

and

even

less

foodfor

the

Third

World

than

melting

could

severelyflood

many

countries.
