StyleThis

letter

style

is

very

modern.

It

is

popular

in

the

United

States

and

isnow

being

increasingly

adopted

in

many

other

countries.Its

mainfeature

is

that

all

lines

begin

at

the

left

margin,

as

shown

here.

Thereshould

bea

double

line

space

between

two

paragraphs

to

make

thereading

easy.This

letter

also

illustrates

the

open

style

of

punctuation,which

means

that

punctuation

is

omitted

after

thesalutation

and

complimentary

closing,

except

the

full

stopsto

mark

abbreviations.This

style

has

a

neat

appearance.

It

eliminates

many

extrakeyboarding

strokes

and

motions

and,

therefore,

helps

toincrease

proficiency

in

letter

writing.SincerelyHelen

TheModified-Block

StyleThe

modified-block

style

is

the

most

frequently

used

letter

style

inbusiness

today.

This

style

has

the

date

line,

complimentary

closing,andthe

writer’s

signature

beginning

at

the

center.

All

other

the

style

usually

uses

standard

punctuation.

This

meansthat

colon

is

typed

after

the

salutation

and

a

comma

afterthe

complimentary

closing,

as

shown

in

this

letter.The

advantage

of

this

style

is

that

it

has

a

more

balancedappearance

than

the

block

style

and

that

it

is

faster

tokeyboard

than

those

styles

with

Block

Style

with

Indented

Paragraphs

This

is

actually

a

modified

form

of

the

indented

style

which

is

atraditional

British

practice.

Although

the

first

two

letter

styles

aremore

widely

used,

this

style

is

also

popular,

probably

because

itsparagraphs

are

indented

in

the

same

way

as

those

in

books,newspapers,

andmagazines.

The

only

difference

between

this

style

and

themodified-block

style

is

that

all

the

paragraphs

should

beindented.

It

has

the

advantage

of

cramming

moreparagraphs

into

the

same

page

because

we

can

eliminatethe

blank

lines

between

paragraphs
