Firstly,Ithinkpersistenceshouldcomefirstbeforetheotherthreepersonalitycharacters.Asweallknowthatapersoncannotalwayssuccessfullyreachhisaimathisfirsttry,therearemanybarrierswaitingforhim.Thereforethepersonwillfailmanytimesbeforehegetshisvictory.Ifhedoesntpersistintryingagainandagainandmakeabreakthrough,thushewillstaystill,noprogress.Hemaynotmoveforwardorevenregress.Apersonwithoutthepersonalcharacterofpersistencecan’tfinallysucceedingettinghisgoal.

WhatstruckmewasthatI.Q.wasnottheonlydifferencebetweenmybestandmyworststudents.SomeofmystrongestperformersdidnothavestratosphericI.Q.scores.Someofmysmartestkidswerentdoingsowell.

Andthatgotmethinking.Thekindsofthingsyouneedtolearninseventhgrademath,sure,theyrehard:ratios,decimals,theareaofaparallelogram.Buttheseconceptsarenotimpossible,andIwasfirmlyconvincedthateveryoneofmystudentscouldlearnthematerialiftheyworkedhardandlongenough.

Afterseveralmoreyearsofteaching,Icametotheconclusionthatwhatweneedineducationisamuchbetterunderstandingofstudentsandlearningfromamotivationalperspective,fromapsychologicalperspective.Ineducation,theonethingweknowhowtomeasurebestisI.Q.,butwhatifdoingwellinschoolandinlifedependsonmuchmorethanyourabilitytolearnquicklyandeasily

SoIlefttheclassroom,andIwenttograduateschooltobecomeapsychologist.Istartedstudyingkidsandadultsinallkindsofsuperchallengingsettings,andineverystudymyquestionwas,whoissuccessfulhereandwhyMyresearchteamandIwenttoWestPointMilitaryAcademy.Wetriedtopredictwhichcadetswouldstayinmilitarytrainingandwhichwoulddropout.WewenttotheNationalSpellingBeeandtriedtopredictwhichchildrenwouldadvancefarthestincompetition.Westudiedrookieteachersworkinginreallytoughneighborhoods,askingwhichteachersarestillgoingtobehereinteachingbytheendoftheschoolyear,andofthose,whowillbethemosteffectiveatimprovinglearningoutcomesfortheirstudentsWepartneredwithprivatecompanies,asking,whichofthesesalespeopleisgoingtokeeptheirjobsAndwhosgoingtoearnthemostmoneyInallthoseverydifferentcontexts,onecharacteristicemergedasasignificantpredictorofsuccess.Anditwasntsocialintelligence.Itwasntgoodlooks,physicalhealth,anditwasntI.Q.Itwasgrit.

Sofar,thebestideaIveheardaboutbuildinggritinkidsissomethingcalledgrowthmindset.ThisisanideadevelopedatStanfordUniversitybyCarolDweck,anditisthebeliefthattheabilitytolearnisnotfixed,thatitcanchangewithyoureffort.Dr.Dweckhasshownthatwhenkidsreadandlearnaboutthebrainandhowitchangesandgrowsinresponsetochallenge,theyremuchmorelikelytoperseverewhentheyfail,becausetheydontbelievethatfailureisapermanentcondition.

Sogrowthmindsetisagreatideaforbuildinggrit.Butweneedmore.AndthatswhereImgoingtoendmyremarks,becausethatswhereweare.Thatstheworkthatstandsbeforeus.Weneedtotakeourbestideas,ourstrongestintuitions,andweneedtotestthem.Weneedtomeasurewhetherwevebeensuccessful,andwehavetobewillingtofail,tobewrong,tostartoveragainwithlessonslearned.

Itwasalongfouryears.EvenafterIhadactuallygraduated,thenightmaresbegantohauntme,theuniversitywouldcalltosayIhadn’ttrulygraduated.TherehadbeenamistakeandtherewasjustonemoreclassIneededtotake.Iwasalwayssorelievedtowakeupandrealizethatithadonlybeenabaddream.Inreality,Ihadcompletedeverycourseneededformydegree,andIwasafull-fledgedcollegegraduate!

Now,therestofmylifeloomedaheadofme.Sometimesabachelor’sdegreepreparesyouforaspecificoccupation——youtraintobeanaccountant,yougraduateandgetapositioninanaccountingfirm.Often,however,yourstintincollegeonlypreparesyoutomakefurtherdecisionsregardingyourfuture.You’reprettysurewhatyoudon’twanttodo!

Duringmysenioryearofcollege,Ihadtoyedwiththeideaofchangingmymajor.Atthatpoint,Ihadfinallydiscoveredwhatcapturedmyheart.But,wantingtofinallybefinishingschoolwasastrongerpull.So,Itookafewcoursesinphysiologyandexercisescience,butnotenoughtoreceiveadegreeinphysicaltherapy.Thatwouldrequireadvancedschooling,beyondmybachelor’sdegree——andIjustwasn’treadytotacklethat.HavingcompletedmyB.C.degree,Ididn’thaveanyintentionsoffurtheringmyeducation.

So,Ididthesafethingandgotanofficejob——theverythingIwassurethatIdidn’twanttodo!Idetestedtheofficepolicies,thesuitsIhadtowearandthedowntownenvironmentthatIhadtodrivetoeveryday.IknewthiswasnotwhereIbelonged.

Butgodknewwhatpathmycareerwastofollow.Apositionopenedupatthemostexclusivehealthclubinourcity,soIapplied.Thiswasmykindofenvironment——anactive,vibrantkindofplace——completelyattheoppositeendofthespectrumfromtheofficeenvironmentwhereIfoundmyself.ThepositionrequiredthatIworkSaturdaynightsandSundaymornings.Perfect,Ithought!IcouldkeepmyofficejobMondaythroughFridayandworkatmydreamjobontheweekends.Thisarrangementlastedseveralmonthsuntil,eventually,afull-timepositionopenedupandIwasabletoresignfrommyofficejob.

Overthenextfewyears,Iworkedmywayuptheleader,gainingexperienceinseveraldifferentdepartments.Ifoundmynicheasthedirectorofmemberservices——cateringtoourclienteleandprovidingthemwithnumerouscutting-edgeprograms.Iwouldhavestayedatthatjobforever——itseemedtobethepinnacleofallmydreamsfulfilled.HerewerefellowemployeeswhohadapassionforthesamethingsthatIdid——healthandfitness.Yetagain,godhadotherplansformylife.Withintwoyears,anewer,bigger,betterandmorestate-of-the-arthealthclubfacilitywasbuilt——justfivemilesdowntheroad.And,inturn,theownerlostmanymemberstothatclub.And,inturn,theownerlostthousandsofdollars.Onebyonewewereeachlaidoff.
