AstudypublishedearlierthismonthbyresearchersatNorthCarolinaStateUniversity,forexample,findsthatparentalinvolvement–checking,attendingschoolmeetingsandevents,discussingschoolactivitiesathome–hasamorepowerfulinfluenceonstudents’academicperformancethananythingabouttheschoolthestudentsattend.Anotherstudy,publishedintheReviewofEconomicsandStatistics,reportsthattheeffortputforthbyparentsreadingstoriesaloudhasabiggerimpactontheirchildren’seducaionalachievementthantheeffortdevotedbyeitherteachersorthestudentsthemselves.Andathirdstudyconcludesthatschoolswouldhavetoincreasetheirspendingbymorethan$1,000perpupilinordertoachievethesameresultsthataregainedwithparentalinvolvement.68 .Butitisalsorevealedinresearchesthatparents,ofallbackgrounds,don’tneedtobuyexpensiveeducationaltoysordigitaldevicesfortheirkidsinordertogivethemanadvantage.Theydon’tneedtodrivetheiroffspringtoenrientclassesortest-preparationcourses.Whattheyneedtodowiththeirchildrenismuchsimpler:talk.Butnotjustanytalk.69
