3、stitutionwasestablishedin1845,withmygreatgreatgreatgrandfather,PrinceAlbert,asthefirstPatron.Then,asnow,therewasapressingneedtoprovidethebestpossibleeducationforthepeoplewhoweregoingtolookaftertheland.Andwhicheveraspectoffarmingorlandmanagementyouhavechosentospecializein,thatis,asthePrincipalwassayi

4、ng,ahugeresponsibility.Itisabsolutelyclear,Ithink,thatthemostfundamentalchallengestheworldfacesoverthecomingyearswillneedtobesolvedbythoseworkinginagriculture.Feedinganunsustainablygrowingglobalpopulationofsomeninebillionpeoplewithlimitednaturalresources,whilecopingwiththeinevitableimpactsofclimatec

5、hangeand,atthesametime,sustainingNature'scapacitytosustainus,willbenomeanfeat.WearenowpushingNature'slife-supportsystemssofarthattheyarestrugglingtocopewithwhatweaskofthem.Soilsarebeingdepleted,demandforwaterisgrowingevermorevoraciousandtheentiresystemisatthemercyofanincreasinglyfluctuatingp

6、riceofoil.Whenwetalkaboutagricultureandfoodproduction,wearetalkingaboutacomplexandinterrelatedsystemanditissimplynotpossibletosingleoutjustoneobjective,suchasmaximizingproduction,withoutalsoensuringthatthesystemwhichdeliversthoseincreasedyieldsmeetssociety'sotherneeds.Thesemustsurelyincludethema

7、intenanceofpublichealth,thesafeguardingofruralemploymentandsmallholderfarming,theprotectionoftheenvironmentandvitalnaturalecosystems.Dealingwithsuchdauntingchallengeswillrequireadifferentapproach-anapproachthatputstheprotectionofnaturalecosystemsbackattheheartofthewholeprocess,soastoseeadramaticimpr

8、ovementinsoilhealthandorganicmatterandtoensuregenuinefoodsecurity,nottomentionIong-termhumanhealth.Itwillalsorequiretheverybestofhumaningenuity,dedicationandresourcefuIness.Andthat,tome,iswhyfarmingandlandmanagementcanneverbejustanotherindustry'.You,ladiesandgentlemen,willverysoonbeactingascusto
