5、 think I have it down to an art, my technique honed from years of watching The Railway Children, Sleepless in Seattle and that scene in Dumbo when the mother elephant is locked away. "Daddy!" my sons will say, pointing the accusing finger. "You're crying!""Me? Over Dumbo

6、? Ha ha ha. No, boys, what I am doing is man-crying, a sort of non-crying cry. I'll teach you it one day. Very useful."They are too young to appreciate the nuance yet, but when they are older I will explain that open sobbing is associated with being female, and so inappropriate for men. The

7、 Charlie Chaplin analogy might be useful here. He once said that the way to act drunk is to imagine yourself a drunk man trying to act sober. The same is true when a man learns the non-crying cry. To be convincing, you must look as if you are trying to avoid tears.In this respect, it is important fo

8、r a young man to appreciate the difference between male tears and female. I remember once asking the actress Emilia Fox if she could cry at will, right there and then, over lunch. To my astonishment, she could from a standing start. Fat tears rolling down her cheeks. When she had finished, she resum

9、ed her smiling countenance.Those are female tears, and the reason you never hear anyone say: "It's enough to make a grown woman cry." That expression only works when it refers to "grown men" and though that may seem tautological, the "grown" is justified. Not all me

10、n are grown. The emotionally incontinent exhibitionists who cry when they are kicked off talent shows such as The X Factor are not grown men, for example. Men have to be careful what they cry at, because some subjects are more worthy of tears than others. Grief, obviously. But not self-pity. And rar

11、ely should a man cry in pain. And never at the death of a princess he didn't know. Those are the rules. I suspect my colleague Matt Pritchett might be with me on this. One of his cartoons this past week showed a father next to a television tuned to the World Cup, explaining to his children that

12、"at some point in the next few weeks, you are going to see me cry". And the day after the last survivor of the Great Escape died, he did a cartoon showing a gravestone with a mound of tunnelled earth trailing away from it. I seemed to have something in my eye when I saw that, and I expect

13、he had the same something in his eye when he drew it.愛就是一切WHATEVER LOVE MEANSDIANAAlthough neither or them remembered the occasion, Diana first met her future husband when she was just a baby. It happened during the winter of 1961, when twelve-year-old Charles, Prince of Wales, was visiting his moth

It was a cold, rainy, bleak afternoon when sixteen-year-old Diana, dressed in a borrowed parka that was too large for her, boots, and blue jean

16、s, crossed the field to meet the heir to the British throne. It was almost twilight when the two came face to face near Nobottle Woods. “What a sad man,” Diana thought when she first saw him. The future Princess was intrigued to finally meet the most eligible bachelor in England, thought she was not

17、 impressed with his five-foot-ten-inch height, thinking to herself that she would tower over him in high heels. But Diana would later say that she admired his beautiful blue eyes. The Prince later remarked that he thought Diana was “a very jolly and attractive” girl, “full of fun,” though Diana hers

18、elf believed that “he barely noticed me at all.” Diana, it was discovered later, first came to the attention of the royal family when she acted as a bridesmaid for her sister Janes wedding that April. It was the first major social occasion that Diana attended as a young woman. And many of the royals

19、 were surprised at how beautiful and mature the once-gawky girl had become. Even the Queen Mother. Prince Charless grandmother, noticed Dianas beauty, grace, and charm. She complimented the Earl on the fine job he had done in bringing Diana up. A short time later, Prince Charles sent his valet to ha

20、nd-deliver a formal invitation for Diana to accompany him that very evening to the opera and a latenight dinner at the palace. Though she was flustered, and the invitation came at such short notice, Diana accepted. She and her roommate, Carolyn Bartholomew, hurried to dress and prepare Diana for her

21、 big date. The evening was a success, and an invitation to party on the royal yacht came soon after Although she was intimidated by the crowd at Balmoral, Diana was wise enough not to stay in the castle itself . She asked for, and was granted, an invitation to stay with her sister Jane and her young

22、 husband at their cottage on the Balmoral estate. The Prince visited Diana there every day, offering to escort her to a barbecue, or extending an invitation for a long walk in the woods. When Charles went to Switzerland for a ski vacation, Diana missed him terribly. He called her after a day or two,

23、 and told Diana he had something important to ask her. He arrived home on February, 3, 1981.Three days later, he arranged to see Diana at Windsor Castle. Late that evening, while Prince Charles was showing Diana the nursery, he asked her to marry him. To his surprise, Diana treated his proposal as a

24、 joke, She actually giggled. But soon she could see that Prince Charles was serious. Despite an insistent voice inside her head that told her she would never be Queen, she accepted his proposal. Diana told Prince Charles over and over that she loved him. “Whatever love means.” Was his reply. -愛就是一切黛

46、 needs to talk about themselves sometimes to someone who is interested - I try to provide that for her as often as I can.I try to surprise her on a regular basis. I'll spend an hour preparing a really excellent supper when she doesn't expect it. I'll spontaneously give the kids a bath wh

47、en she's comfortable on the couch under a blanket, even if it's her turn. Doing these little unexpected things not only shows her I care, but also often compels her to do similar things for me.I hold her hand. I do this all the time, whenever it crosses my mind and seems appropriate. I'l

48、l just hold her hand gently while we're talking or we're riding in the car or we're waiting for an appointment or we're sitting on the couch in the evenings.I talk about EVERYTHING with her and let her determine what's interesting. If something is concerning me, I don't hide

49、it from her. I tell her about it. Most of the time she's interested and we'll discuss it - sometimes she's not and I let it drop (this is key - if she's not into the topic, I don't push it). Either way, though, she gets the message that I'm making an effort to share and be op

50、en.I work on building a positive relationship with her family. Whenever I visit or see anyone in her family, I make a special effort to try to establish or build upon a strong relationship with them. This accomplishes several things: it makes her more at ease in a family situation, it helps me to bu

51、ild stronger ties with people that are important to her, and it helps me to understand the influences that were around her as she grew up.I send her messages during the day.About once a week, during a time where my wife is really present in my thoughts, I send her a little simple note by email. All

52、it says is something along the lines of "I was thinking about you just now. I can't wait until I see you this evening." It's just a very simple way of letting her know she's on my mind and in my heart. I put careful thought into gifts I give her. Sure, it's easy to just run out and get a generic gift to cover yourself
