When the early Protestant immigrants came to this country, they brought the idea that work was the way to God and heaven. This attitude, the Protestant Work Ethic(道德規(guī)范), still influences America today. Work is not only important for economic benefits, the salary, but also for social and psychological needs, the feeling of doing something for the good of the society. Americans spend most of their lives working, being productive. For most Americans, their work defines them: they are what they do. What happens then, when a person can no longer work? Almost all Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire; but leaving ones job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Many retirees do not know how to use their time or they feel lost without their jobs. Retirements can also bring financial problems. Many people rely on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, Medicare(health care)and welfare(general assistance), but many senior citizens have to change their life styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel and other necessities.Of course, many senior citizens are happy with retirement. They have time to spend with their families or enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time, others do volunteer work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new business. Many retired citizens also belong to “Golden Age” groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many chances for retirees. American society is only beginning to be concerned about the special physical and emotional needs of its senior citizens. The government is taking steps to ease the problem of limited income. They are building new housing, offering discounts in stores and museums and on buses, and providing other services such as free courses, food service, and help with housework. Retired citizens are a rapidly growing percentage of the population. This part of the population is very important and we must meet their needs. After all, every citizen will be a senior citizen someday.58. The author believes that work first became important to Americans because of _.A. religionB. economyC. psychologyD. family59. The passage is mainly about _.A. money and checkB. senior and juniorC. work and retirementD. Protestants and Americans60. When Americans stop work, its difficult for them to _.A. get Social Security checks B. feel productive C. enjoy themselvesD. be religiousCThe healthy adolescent boy or girl likes to do the real things in life, to do the things that matter. He would rather be a plumbers mate and do a real job that requires doing than learn about hydrostatics(流體靜力學(xué)) sitting at a desk, without understanding what practical use they are going to be. A girl would rather look after the baby than learn about child care. Logically we should learn about things before doing them and that is probably why the experts enforce this in our educational system. But it is not the natural way nor, in my view, the best way. The adolescent wants to do things first for only then does he appreciate the problems involved and want to learn more about them. They do these things better in primitive life, for there at puberty(青春期) the boy joins his father in making canoes, patching huts, going out fishing or hunting. He is serving his apprenticeship in the actual accomplishments of life. It is not surprising that anthropologists(人類學(xué)家) find that the adolescents of primitive communities do not suffer from the same neurotic(神經(jīng)質(zhì)的) “difficulties” as those of civilized life. This is not, as some assume, because they are permitted more sexual freedom, but because they are given more natural outlets for their native interests and powers and are allowed to grow up freely into a full life of responsibility in the community. In the 19th century this was recognized in the apprenticeship system, which allowed the boy to go out with the master carpenter, or ploughman, to engage in the actual work of carpentry or roof-mending, and so to learn his trade. In some agricultural colleges at the present time young men have to do a years work on a farm before their theoretical training at college. The great advantage of this system is that it lets the apprentice see the practical problems before he sets to work learning how to solve them, and he can therefore take a more intelligent interest in his theoretical work. Since more knowledge of more things is now required in order to cope with the adult world, the period of growing-up to independence takes much longer than it did in a more primitive community, and the responsibility for such education, which formerly was in the hands of the parents, is now necessarily undertaken by experts at school. But that should not make us lose sight of the basic principle, namely the need and the desire of the adolescent to engage responsibly in the real pursuits of life and then to learn howto learn through responsibility, not to learn before responsibility. 61. According to the author, what is the natural way of education? A. Doing things while learning. B. Doing things as an apprentice. C. Doing things before learning. D. Learning practical knowledge first. 62. The main advantage of the natural way of education, whether in primitive or modern times, is that learners _. A. can learn the trade through solving problems at work B. can work with their masters throughout their learningC. are given more freedom in doing things and learning D. are given opportunities to develop their interest first63. According to the context, “this” in the third paragraph refers to _. A. the way of learning in primitive communities B. the difficulties modern adolescents experience C. the amount of freedom in learning in primitive life D. the kind of skills boys learned from their father 64. Which of the following sums up the authors main point? A. The apprenticeship system was effective in learning. B. Students should be given more freedom in learning. C. Students develop their interest through learning.D. Learning to solve problems is learning through responsibility.DWhen the residents of Buenos Aires want to change the pesos they do not trust into the dollars they do, they go to an office that acts as a front for thriving illegal exchange market. As the couriers carry their bundles of pesos around Buenos Aires, they pass grand buildings like the Teatro Colon, an opera house that opened in 1908, and the Retiro railway station, completed in 1915.
