When I think more about this word, I picture someone who has accomplished good things for people and tries to do the right thing. Hattie Elizabeth Alexander is one person whom I find to be very heroic.Hattie was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 5,1901. During her time at college she earned her Bachelors Degree in Bacteriology and Physiology. These were just the first steps toward what she was finally going to be remembered for. After college Hattie attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and received her medical degree. After her education, she pursued her career, and after much time and hard work, she drastically reduced the number of infants (幼兒) dying from meningitis (腦膜炎). Hattie was very dedicated to her work and helped at as many locations as she could. Spending substantial (大量的) time in the laboratory, Hattie successfully developed a cure against the disease, which decreased the death rate to 20 percent. At the same time, she was also a teacher working with Columbia University. She was a caring lady interested in other peoples lives. When she was teaching at Columbia University, other members would talk to her about students that were failing their classes, and somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. Later, Hattie became an instructor in Pediatrics at New York Citys Babies Hospital. After many honors, she became the first woman president of the American Pediatric Society in 1965. This was her last major achievement, for soon after, Hattie died of cancer on June 24,1968.Hattie is my hero because her positive attitude and strength helped her accomplish great things for others. She gave them her strength by developing medicines against diseases, which, by doing so, made them stronger. This is what makes Hattie Elizabeth Alexander my hero. 5According to the passage, Hattie Elizabeth Alexander _.Areceived her Bachelors Degree in Johns Hopkins SchoolBspent all her time in the laboratory developing cures for illnessesCcared a lot about others private livesDalways tried her best to help prevent students from dropping out of college解析:D細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)文章第四段第二句. somehow Hattie could always find convincing reasons as to why they should not be driven away. 6The underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably means“_”AslightlyBhardlyCgreatly Dtotally解析:C詞義猜測(cè)題。 7Hattie is considered to be a hero by the author in that _.Ashe was an honorable, hardworking and happy personBshe was a very dedicated woman doctor with many honorsCshe was a caring lady who helped many students finish collegeDshe was the first woman president of the APS解析:A推理判斷題。 故選A項(xiàng)。8Which of the following would be the most proper title for the text?AAn Honorable WomanBA Woman Accomplishing Great ThingsCMy Hero Hattie Elizabeth AlexanderDThe First Woman President of the APS解析:C主旨大意題。 Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely. One citizen, however, is trying to change this. “You get on the Tube and its completely silent and its weird,” says Jonathan Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges (徽章) with the words “Tube chat?” last month, encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another. “I handed out 500 badges during rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24 hours it completely snowballed,” he says. Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK, as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.Although Dunne says hes received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with his idea. Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges with the words “Dont even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson, 24, a student from London, agrees. “Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesnt need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to you,” he says.“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I dont, but its been a great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next to you? Just make sure to check for a badge first.【解題導(dǎo)語(yǔ)】每年乘坐倫敦地鐵的乘客眾多,可是人們?nèi)匀桓械焦陋?dú);為此Jonathan Dunne發(fā)起了一個(gè)旨在鼓勵(lì)乘客相互交談的運(yùn)動(dòng),此舉引起了世界媒體的關(guān)注。 9How did Dunne encourage London passengers to talk with each other?ABy putting up posters on the tube.BBy advocating his idea on the media.CBy offering passengers special badges.DBy starting a dialogue with passengers. 根據(jù)第二段的“who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out badges (徽章) with the words Tube chat?” 10How is Dunnes campaign getting along?AIt has caught international attention.BIt has become a worldwide campaign.CMost passengers have refused to accept it.DWilson has made great efforts to promote it. 根據(jù)第二段的“Tube chat campaign have since been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the UK, as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances”可知,Dunne和他的“Tube chat”運(yùn)動(dòng)引起了世界各種媒體的關(guān)注,故A項(xiàng)正確。 11According to Michael Robinson, what should tube passengers do?AHand in their feedback in time.BWalk up and talk to strangers.CStop using public transport.DEnjoy the peace quietly. 根據(jù)第三段的“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their journeys to and from work. An open, polite and friendly approach, expecting a satisfactory result, normally results in one as people tend to respond with a similar attitude. If, however, you present an argument with an angry, accusing tone, expecting trouble, there is little doubt that this is what youll get! Some people see the world through a filter of optimism and some through a filter of pessimism (悲觀) which largely comes down to having a positive or negative (消極的) attitude. People who are suffering from a negative attitude primarily think that something cant be done; they talk about problems, see all the difficulties, find fault with and criticize other people and focus on all the things they would like but havent got. On the contrary, people blessed with a positive attitude think that anything is possible. They look for ways to solve the problems, they see the good in everybody, and they are grateful for all the good things in their lives.Whether suffering from or blessed with your attitude, this is not something that is put on us from the outside. We are very much responsible for our own attitude. We all start out with a “clean” board but this can get muddied by our experiences in life. As children we are made fun of and even get bullied (欺侮) and rejected, start to experience doubt and lose our selfconfidence. If this continues into adulthood, it can result in a bad attitude in later life.【解題導(dǎo)語(yǔ)】本文展現(xiàn)出了積極的人生態(tài)度的重要性?!倦y句分析】You will probably know from personal experience what a difference your attitude can make when, for example, youre returning faulty goods or making a complaint.分析:本句是一個(gè)復(fù)合句。what引導(dǎo)賓語(yǔ)從句,when引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句。譯文:你將很可能從個(gè)人的經(jīng)歷中了解你的態(tài)度會(huì)有多么大的影響,譬如在你把有瑕疵的貨物退回或在投訴時(shí)。13It can be inferred from Paragraph 2 that people are likely to treat others _.Athe way they are treatedBbetter when they are satisfiedCworse when they are in troubleDthe way they consider appropriate解析:A考查細(xì)節(jié)理解。根據(jù)第二段的整體內(nèi)容尤其是“as people tend to respond with a similar attitude”可知,你以什么樣的態(tài)度對(duì)待他人,他人也會(huì)用同樣的方式對(duì)待你。14According to the writer, what affects peoples life attitude?AThe situation they face.BThe people around them.CTheir expectations of life.DThe way they view the world.解析:D考查推理判斷。根據(jù)第三段的整體內(nèi)容并結(jié)合最后一段中的“We are very. In the rush to achieve, the idea of being “better” can become lost sometimes. You may always wonder how to improve yourself and fulfill your dreams in an easier way. _1_Explore your talents.Everybody has some outstanding skills or interests. So its often necessary to be patient and try many things before you find one that suits you._2_ For example, people loving adventure may not be interested in the quiet chess club, but someone who enjoys other quiet activities might be.
