AIn many developed countries, people who have high degrees begin to work longer than those who dont. About 65% of American men aged 6274 with a professional degree are in the workforce (勞動(dòng)人口), compared with 32% of men who only finish high school. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the welleducated wealthy and the unskilled poor. Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound. The world is facing an astonishing rise in the number of old people, and they will live longer than ever before. Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity (長(zhǎng)壽) translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift (變化) will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling (漸增的) ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems.Policies are partly responsible. Many European governments have abandoned policies that used to encourage people to retire early. Even the betteroff must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role. Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap (獲得) rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive than the preceding (先前的) generation. Technological change may well reinforce (強(qiáng)化) that shift: the skills that complement (補(bǔ)充) computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.1What is the common phenomenon in the workforce in rich countries?AYounger people are replacing the elderly.BWelleducated people tend to work longer.CPeople with no college degree cannot find any job.DUnemployment rates are decreasing year after year. 根據(jù)文章第一段的第一句“In many developed countries, people who have high degrees begin to work longer than those who dont”可知,在發(fā)達(dá)國(guó)家,受過良好教育的人的工作年限更長(zhǎng),故選B。2In view of the experience of the 20th century, many observers predict that _.Aeconomic growth will slow downBgovernment budgets will decreaseCmore people will try to receive higher educationDthere will be more competition in the job market解析:選A細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段的最后一句“The experience of the 20th century . slower economic growth, while the swelling (漸增的) ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems”可知,選A。3According to the text, what is the result of policy changes in European countries?AUnskilled workers may choose to retire early.BMore and more people have to go abroad to hunt for jobs.CPeople may be able to use computers to do more complicated work.DEven wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement. 根據(jù)最后一段的第三句“Even the betteroff must work longer to have a comfortable retirement”可知,歐洲國(guó)家政策的變化導(dǎo)致富有的人也必須工作更長(zhǎng)時(shí)間才能過上舒服的退休生活,故選D。4The underlined word “knowhow” in the last paragraph probably refers to “_”Aa completely different environmentBpractical knowledge and technical skillsCa better understanding of policy changesDthe courage to face difficulties and dangers解析:選B詞義猜測(cè)題。根據(jù)最后一段的最后一句“Technological change may well reinforce (強(qiáng)化) that shift: the skills that complement (補(bǔ)充) computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age”可知,knowhow是對(duì)skills的限定修飾,由此可推知,knowhow指相應(yīng)的技能和知識(shí),故選B。BThe principles about applying for jobs have altered greatly lately. In the past, people preferred a hand written application letter. However, nowadays it is becoming more and more common to apply for a job through the Internet. You can find information on the Internet about how to apply for jobs. Information can be found about how to fulfill your application letter, the clothes that you should wear and how to carry out the interview itself. The importance of body language is often mentioned, but doesnt always get the attention it deserves. After all, before a word has even been spoken, your body language will have already given people their first impression of you. Additionally, your body language will also give out a lot more information. Based on your body language it can be seen if you are selfconfident. It can also show if you are a busy or a quiet type and it helps give an impression of whether you are speaking truthfully or not. Body language can show how enthusiastic you are and if you are a nice person. Someone who will take his work seriously, but also someone who has a sense of humor and can enjoy a joke from time to time. The members of the application committee will ask you questions, but your answers wont only be oral. The committee will not only pay attention to what you say, but also to how you say it!Body language will determine first if it clicks, and sometimes all it takes is just a few seconds. Everybody uses body language, but it takes place mostly at a subconscious (下意識(shí)的) level.Using body language appropriately, you can definitely increase your chances of getting a job. 5What kind of people is the text mainly meant for?AInterviewers.BJobhunting people.CEmployersDLaidoff workers. 6We can learn from the first paragraph that_.Ahandwritten letters are not used in finding a jobBthe more expensive clothes interviewees wear, the betterCbody language is more important than spoken wordsDthe Internet is of significance in applying for a job解析:選D推理判斷題。 7Using body language well in a job interview will probably help_.Aget rid of the interviewers prejudiceBdetermine what position one will getCincrease the possibility of getting the wanted jobDremove nervousness解析:選C細(xì)節(jié)理解題。 8Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?AThose using body language are usually confident.BBody language is often used on purpose in job hunting.CBody language is a mirror to reflect ones personality.DPeople enjoying jokes are preferred in a job interview. CThere are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board. Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses. Or, job searchers can look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Website to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do.For example, there is a book called What Color is Your Parachute (降落傘)? by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career (職業(yè)) since it was first published in nineteen seventy. Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.9What is the passage mainly about?AFinding a job.BCollege students p
