AbeautifullypreservedfossilfromsouthernGermanyraises

paleontologistsargueinastudypublishedThursday.
The150million-year-oldfossilisajuvenilecarnivorous
dinosaurabout21/2feetlongthatscientistsnamedJuravenator,
fortheJuramountainswhereitwasfound.
Itwouldhavelookedsimilarinlifetothefleet-footedpredators
thatmenacedayounggirlonthebeachduringtheopeningsceneof
“TheLostWorld,“thesecondJurassicParkmovie.
Thefossilsexceptionallywell-preservedbonestructureclearly
putsitamongfeatheredkinonthedinosaurfamilytree.Because
allofitscloserelativesarefeathered,paleontologistswould
expectJuravenatortofollowsuit.
Butasmallpatchofskinonthecreaturestailshowsnosignof
feathers.Andtheskinalsodoesnthavethefolliclesthatare
typicaloffeathereddinosaurs,saidLuisChiappe,directorofthe
DinosaurInstituteattheNaturalHistoryMuseumofLosAngeles
County.UeandUrsulaB.GohlichoftheUniversityofMunichdescribe
thefossilinThursdaysissueofthejournalNature.
“Ithasatypicalscalydinosaurianskin,“Chiappesaid.
ThepaleontologistsbelieveJuravenatorsclosestknownrelative
mayhavebeenafullyfeathereddinosaurfromChina,
Sinosauropterix.
ThereareanumberofpossibleexplanationsforJuravenators
nakedness.Featherscouldhavebeenlostontheevolutionaryline
leadingtoJuravenatorafterarisinginanancestortobothitand
itsfeatheredrelatives.Orfeatherscouldhaveevolvedmorethan
onceindinosaurs,croppingupinsisterspeciesatdifferenttimes
andplaces.Itisalsopossiblethatthisparticularfossilof
Juravenator,whichappearstobeajuvenile,onlygrewfeathersas
anadultorlostitsfeathersforpartoftheyear.
Butthereisanotherpossibilityaswell,saidMarkNorell,
curatorofpaleontologyattheAmericanMuseumofNaturalHistory:
ItisentirelypossiblethatJuravenatordidhavefeathers,butthey
simplyfailedtofossilize.

Tosupporthishypothesishepointedoutthatseveralfossilsof
theoldestknownbird,archaeopteryx,lackfeathers.

itasachallengetothewidelyacceptedviewthatmodernbirdsare
descendedfromdinosaurs.

andhewasalwaysintroublewithMissWhite.Hisheartwouldbreak
underhersharpwords,andwhenhewaspunishedforfailingtoturn
inhishomework,hefeltjustmiserable!Still,hedidnotstudy.
Inthemiddleofthefirstsemesterofschool,theentireseventh
gradewastestedforbasicskills.Stevehurriedthroughhistests,
andcontinuedtodreamofotherthings,asthedayworeon.Hisheart
wasnotinschool,butinthewoods,whereheoftenescapedalone,
tryingtoshutoutthesights,soundsandsmellsofhisalcoholic
home.Noonecheckedonhimtoseeifhewassafe.Nooneknewhe
wasgone,becausenoonewassoberenoughtocare.Oddly,Stevenever
missedadayofschool.
Oneday,MissWhitesimpatientvoicebrokeintohisdaydreams.
“Steve!!”Startled,heturnedtolookather.
“Payattention!
StevelockedhisgazeonMissWhitewithadolescentadoration,
asshebegantogooverthetestresultsfortheseventhgrade.
“Youalldidprettywell,“shetoldtheclass,“exceptforone
boy,anditbreaksmyhearttotellyouthis,but…"Shehesitated,
pinningStevetohisseatwithasharpstare,hereyessearching
hisface.

ShejuststaredatSteve,astheclassspunaroundforagoodlook.
Stevedroppedhiseyesandcarefullyexaminedhisfingertips.
Afterthat,itwaswar!!Stevestillwouldntdohishomework.Even
asthepunishmentsbecamemoresevere,heremainedstubborn.

intothehouse,hetookonelookaround.Bothparentswerepassed
out,invariousstagesofundress,andthestenchwasoverpowering!
He,quickly,gathereduphiscampinggear,ajarofpeanutbutter,
aloafofbread,abottleofwater,andthistime...hisschoolbooks.
Grimfacedanddetermined,heheadedforthewoods.
