WhenhewasinCentralAmerica,hefoundoutthathiswifewasdying,sohereturnedtotheUSin1897andwassenttoprison.Inprison,hebeganwritingshortstoriestosupporthisdaughter.Sincehedidn’twanthisreaderstoknowthathewasinprison,hewroteunderthename“O.Henry”.Afterleavingprison,hemovedtoNewYorkCityandbeganasuccessfulwritingcareer.
