TheCanonSpeedlite430EXIIisamulti-featureflashunitforCanon

EOScameras.ItworksautomaticallywithE-TTLII,E-TTL,andTTL

autoflashsystems.Itcanbeusedasanon-cameraflashoraspartofa

wirelessflashsystem.

Readthisinstructionmanualwhilealsoreferringtoyour

camera’sinstructionmanual.

BeforeusingtheSpeedlite,readthisinstructionmanualandyourcamera’s

instructionmanualtofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeSpeedliteoperations.

ThebasicoperationisthesameaswithnormalAEshooting.

Whenthe430EXIIisattachedtoanEOScamera,almostallautomatic

exposurecontrolforflashphotographyishandledbythecamera.

Althoughthe430EXIIisanexternalflashunit,itworksautomaticallyand

seamlesslylikethecamera’sbuilt-inflash.

Itbecomesautomaticallycompatiblewiththecamera’sflash

meteringmode(E-TTLll,E-TTL,andTTL).

Inaccordancewiththecamera’sflashcontrolsystem,theSpeedlitecontrols

theflashautomaticallyintherespectiveflashmeteringmode:

1.E-TTLIIautoflash(evaluativeflashmeteringwithpreflashreading/lens

distanceinformation)

2.E-TTLautoflash(evaluativeflashmeteringwithpreflashreading)

3.TTLautoflash(off-the-filmmeteringforreal-timeflashmetering)

Regardingthecamera’savailableflashmeteringmodes,refertothe

“ExternalSpeedlite”specificationinthe“Specifications”ofyour

camera’sinstructionmanual.

Inthecamerainstructionmanual,camerashavingflashmetering

modes1or2arecalledType-Acameras(compatiblewithE-TTLIIor

E-TTL).Andcamerashavingflashmeteringmode3(compatibleonly

withTTL)areType-Bcameras.

Atestfiringcannotbefiredwhilethecamera’soperationtimer4or0

TheSpeedlite’ssettingswillberetainedinmemoryevenafterthepower

isturnedoff.ToretaintheSpeedlite’ssettingsafteryoureplacethe

batteries,turnoffthepowerandreplacethebatterieswithin1minute.

UsingE-TTLIIandE-TTLAutoflashintheShootingModes

Justsetthecamera’sshootingmodeto<X>(shutter-priorityAE),

<W>(aperture-priorityAE),or<q>(manual)andyoucanuseE-TTL

II/E-TTLautoflash.

Selectthismodewhenyouwanttosettheshutterspeedmanually.

Thecamerawillthenautomaticallysettheaperturematchingtheshutter

speedtoobtainastandardexposure.

XIftheaperturedisplayblinks,itmeansthatthebackgroundexposurewill

beunderexposedoroverexposed.Adjusttheshutterspeeduntilthe

aperturedisplaystopsblinking.

Selectthismodewhenyouwanttosettheaperturemanually.

Thecamerawillthenautomaticallysettheshutterspeedmatchingthe

aperturetoobtainastandardexposure.

Ifthebackgroundisdarklikeanightscene,aslowsyncspeedwillbeused

toobtainastandardexposureofboththemainsubjectandbackground.

Standardexposureofthemainsubjectisobtainedwiththeflash,whilea

Wstandardexposureofthebackgroundisobtainedwithaslowshutterspeed.

Sinceaslowshutterspeedwillbeusedforlow-lightscenes,usinga

tripodisrecommended.

Iftheshutterspeeddisplayblinks,itmeansthatthebackground

exposurewillbeunderexposedoroverexposed.Adjusttheapertureuntil

theshutterspeeddisplaystopsblinking.

Selectthismodeifyouwanttosetboththeshutterspeedandaperture

manually.

qStandardexposureofthemainsubjectisobtainedwiththeflash.The

exposureofthebackgroundisobtainedwiththeshutterspeedandaperture

combinationyouset.

Ifyouusethe<Z>or<Y>shootingmode,theresultwillbethesameas

usingthe<V>(ProgramAE)mode.

Bypointingtheflashheadtowardawallorceiling,theflashwillbounce

offthesurfacebeforeilluminatingthesubject.Thiscansoftenshadows

behindthesubjectforamorenatural-lookingshot.Thisiscalledbounce

flash.

SettheBounceDirection

Holddownthe<z>buttonandturntheflashhead.

Iftheflashcoverageissetautomatically,theflashcoveragewillbe

fixedto50mm.

TheLCDpanelwillalsodisplay<ZoomOmm>.

Youcanalsosettheflashcoveragemanually.(p.18)

Ifthewallorceilingistoofaraway,thebouncedflashmightbetooweak

andresultinunderexposure.

Thewallorceilingshouldbeaplain,whitecolorforhighreflectance.If

thebouncesurfaceisnotwhite,acolorcastmayresultinthepicture.

Afteryoutaketheshot,iftheflashexposureconfirmationlampdoesnot

light,usealargerapertureopeningandtryagain.Withadigitalcamera,

youcanalsoincreasetheISOspeed.

illuminatedbyboththebounceflashanddirectflash,itwilllook

unnatural.

Pulloutthewidepanelgently.Usingexcessiveforcemaydetachthe

widepanel.
