Since1981,thelocalgovernmentofYangxianCountyhasputforwardfourbansfortheprotectionofthe

species,prohibitingactivitiesincludinghuntinginthebirds?livingareas,cuttingdowntreeswheretheynest,using

chemicalsintheirfood-findingareas,andfiringgunsintheirbreeding(繁殖)areas.TheChinesegovernment

arrangedspecialfundstoprotectthehabitatofcrestedibises,sealingoff(封閉)mountainstoplanttreesinthe

birds5livingareas.Chinastartedtheartificialbreedingofcrestedibisesin1991andhasbredmorethan400birdsin

Shaanxi.

Yearsofconstantefforthavebroughtpromisingresults.Itisestimatedthattherearemorethan5,000crested

ibisesintheworld,andabouthalfofthemliveinShaanxi.Thebird'shabitatinChinahasrisenfromlessthanfive
