詞匯精講

1.other,theother,others,another

(1)other是形容詞,意為“其他的,別的”,其后多接可數(shù)名詞。例如:

I'mafraidthereareotherwaysofsolvingthisproblem.恐怕還有其他的解決這個(gè)問題的方法。

(2)others相當(dāng)于other+可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)形式,代詞,指“其他人或物”,相當(dāng)于一個(gè)復(fù)數(shù)名詞。例如:

Somepeopleenjoyexercise;othersdon't.有些人喜歡運(yùn)動(dòng),有些人則不喜歡。

(3)theothers則表示在一個(gè)特定范圍內(nèi)的其他的全部,表示特指,意為“其余的”。例如:

Youshouldhelptheothersinyourclass.你應(yīng)該幫助班里的其他人。

(4)theother意為“兩個(gè)人或事物中的另一個(gè)”;表示特指,通常與one搭配使用,構(gòu)成“one...theother...

意為“一個(gè)……另一個(gè)……例如:

MissGaohasabookinonehand,andapenintheother.高老師一只手拿書,另一只手拿鋼筆。

(5)another后通常跟單數(shù)名詞,也可泛指單數(shù)名詞,意為“不確定數(shù)目中的另一個(gè)例如:

Pleaseshowmeanother(one).請(qǐng)?jiān)倌靡粋€(gè)給我看看。

2.else和other

else和。ther都是形容詞,意為“別的;其他的"。但兩者用法不同。

(1)else常用于修飾不定代詞,疑問代詞或疑問副詞,也可以修飾all,much,little等詞,修飾這些詞時(shí),

else要位于其后,作后置定語。例如:

Wouldyoutrysomethingelse?你要試試別的嗎?

NobodyelseinmyschoolcomesfromAmerica.我們學(xué)校沒有其它人來自美國。

Areyougoinganywhereelse?你們另外還要去哪里?

(2)other作形容詞,用以修飾名詞或代詞,作定語。例如:

Wherearetheotherbooks?其他的書在哪里?

Doyouhaveanyotherquestions?你還有別的問題嗎?

(3)other作代詞,可以單獨(dú)作主語、賓語、表語,其復(fù)數(shù)形式為others。例如:

Somestudentsareplayingunderthetree.Othersareflyingkitesoverthere.

一些學(xué)生在樹下玩,還有一些在那邊放風(fēng)箏。

3.giveup

giveup是動(dòng)詞短語,意為“放棄;停止;戒除",giveupdoingsomething意為“放棄做某事;半途而廢”。

例如:

Iwillnevergiveupmydream.我永遠(yuǎn)都不會(huì)放棄我的夢(mèng)想。

Thedoctorshadgivenherupbutshemadearemarkablerecovery.

醫(yī)生們已放棄了治愈她的希望,而她卻恢復(fù)得很好。

Youshouldgiveupsmoking,whichisgoodforyourhealth.

你應(yīng)該戒煙,這對(duì)你的健康有好處。

【拓展】

give的相關(guān)短語:

giveaway贈(zèng)送,分發(fā);giveoff放出,釋放;givein屈服,讓步;

giveout分發(fā),用完;giveback歸還

4.improve

improve是動(dòng)詞,意為“改進(jìn);改善;提高”。例如:

TheirFrenchhasimprovedalot.

他們的法語水平提高了很多。

NevermissachancetoimproveyourEnglish.

不要放過任何機(jī)會(huì)來提高你的英語。

【注意】

improve的意思是“改進(jìn);使更好(makebetter)”,已包含better之意,因而不能再與better連用。

【拓展】

improvement是名詞,意為"改善;改進(jìn);提高”。

例如:

Thisessayrepresentsaconsiderableimprovementonyourrecentwork.

這篇論文說明你最近的工作取得了相當(dāng)大的改進(jìn)。

5.patient

(1)patient作為形容詞,意為“有耐性的;忍耐的”。它的名詞形式patience,意思是“耐心;容忍”。

例如:

Hewasendlesslykindandpatientwithchildren,他對(duì)孩子們總是非常好,很有耐心。

Itwashardworkandrequiredallhispatience.工作很艱巨,需要他有極大的耐心。

(2)patient還可以作名詞,意為“病人”。例如:

Theearlierthetreatmentisgiven,thebetterthepatient'schances.

病人越早接受治療,康復(fù)的可能性就越大。

Shewastoughbutwonderfulwithherpatients.

她很嚴(yán)厲,但對(duì)患者卻很好。

6.provide

provide為及物動(dòng)詞,意為“提供”,常和with搭配。providesb.withsth.表示“為某人提供某物”,其同

意表達(dá)為providesth.forsb.o例如:

TheSunprovidesuswithlightandheat.

太陽給我們提供光和熱。

Sheepprovideuswithwool./Sheepprovidewoolforus.

7.runoutof&runout

runoutrunoutof這兩個(gè)短語都有“用完”的意思,但用法不同。runout作不及物動(dòng)詞短語,表示

“被用完;被耗盡”,其主語通常是時(shí)間、金錢、食物等無生命的名詞。而runoutof則是及物動(dòng)詞短

語,表示主動(dòng)。例如:

Hisholidayranout.他的假期用完了。

Hehasrunoutofmoney.他的錢用完了。

Werunoutofwater,andhadtocarrysome.我們的水用完了,所以必須去挑一些了。

8.dependon

dependon意為“視……而定;取決于;依靠”,其后可跟名詞、代詞或從句作賓語,on也可以換為

UpOHo例如:

一Whenshallwestart?我們什么時(shí)候動(dòng)身?

一Itdependson(upon)theweather.依天氣情況而定。

Hedependedonhisuncleafterhisfatherdied.父親去世后,他依靠他的叔叔。

(2)…enoughtodo...可以同too...to…或so...that…結(jié)構(gòu)互相轉(zhuǎn)換。例如:

=Theroomissosmallthatitcan'tholdsomanypeople.

(3)enough...todosth.”有足夠的..做某事”。例如:

(1)enough是形容詞,意為“充足的,充分的,足夠的”,可作表語或定語,作定語時(shí),可放在名詞

的前面或后面。例如:

(2)enough還可作副詞,意為“足夠的”,這時(shí)enough需放在所修飾的形容詞或副詞后面。例如:

2.Britishpeopleareverypoliteathomeaswell,aren*tthey?

aswell常用作狀語,作“又也”解,相當(dāng)于too或also,常位于句末,無須用逗號(hào)與句子分開。例如:

(1)aswellas也作“也,還”講,常用來連接兩個(gè)并列的成分,一般位于句中。它強(qiáng)調(diào)的是前一項(xiàng),

后一項(xiàng)只是順便提及。因此連接并列主語時(shí),謂語動(dòng)詞與前一項(xiàng)一致;翻譯時(shí)要先譯后面,再譯

前面。例如:

不僅你而且你的妻子也對(duì)我很友好。

(2)aswellas可以用來表示同級(jí)比較,指“像/和……一樣好例如:

3.It'smeaningfultodosomethingfortheOlympics.

本句用T"Itis/was+adj.+todosth.”的結(jié)構(gòu),Itis/was+adj.+todosth.意為"做某事是...的”,todo

sth.為句子的真正的主語,而it為形式主語,形式主語不能用別的詞來代替,句中可在形容詞后加for

sb.,意為“對(duì)于某人來說,做某事是……的”。例如:

It9simportantforustostudyEnglishwell,對(duì)我們來說,學(xué)好英語是相當(dāng)重要的。

It'snecessaryforustodoexercisesregularly.

對(duì)我們來說,有規(guī)律的做運(yùn)動(dòng)是很必要的。

這個(gè)句型中的forsb.有時(shí)也可以用ofsb.二者意義有區(qū)別:

(1)在心+時(shí):+forsb.todosth.中,forsb.意為“對(duì)某人來說”,句中的形容詞是用來說明todosth.

的,形式主語只能用ito例如:

(2)在It,s+時(shí):+ofsb.todosth.中ofsb.意為“某人.......”,句中形容詞可與邏輯主語sb.構(gòu)成系

表結(jié)構(gòu),即形容詞是用來說明或形容sb.(某人)的。例如:
