Asstudents,wecouldsharemoretimewithourfriends.Thefriendshipinouryoungheartsispure,freshandsimple.Ioftenfeelveryluckytohavealotofgoodfriends.EspeciallywhenIhadJustinasoneofmybestfriends.JustinwasmyEnglishteacherfromtheUSA.Imethimin1996whenIwasastudentwhocouldonlyspeakverylittleEnglish.Justinwasavividyoungmanwithabrightsmileonhisface,andhealwayshadhisspecialwaytomaketheclassactiveandattractive.HetaughtusEnglishbytellingstories,playinggames,singingsongs,andevendancing.Icouldstillrememberveryclearlythatoneafternoonwhenwefin-ishedourclass,wewenttosomeotherclassestosingsongsforthem,justlikewhatpeopledointhestatesonChristmasEve.Itwassointerestingandunforgettable.Justinwasane*cellentteacher,becausehetaughtusnotonlyhowtostudyEnglishwell,butalsothewaytofindoutthebeautyoftheworldandthewaytobeangelstootherslives.Iknowtherewasfriendshipandpureloveinourhearts.Facingthisvaluableemotionneithernationalitynoragewasimportant,therealimportancelayinfaith,under-standing,andcare.JustinisthebestfriendIhaveeverhad,andIknowIwillcherishthosedaysofstayingtogetherwithhimasthebestpartofmymemory.

However,inthisfast-developingmodernsociety,therealityisnotthat.Moreandmorepeopleforgettoenjoythebeautyoflifeand-thebeautyoffriendship.Theyworkhardinordertogainahigherposition,inthesocietyandtoearnmoremoneyfortheirwork.Ofcourse,wedontdenythatitisimportanttofindabet-terplaceinourlives,butwewishmoreandmorepeoplecouldpayalittlemoreattentiontothemselvesandtheirfriends.Allofushavetosparesometimeforpersonallives.Wehavetofindthechancetoe*pressouremotionandlove.Whenstayingwithourfriends,wecanreleaseourselvescompletely.Wecandowhateverwewant,wecanlaughtogether,talktogether,andevencryto-gether.Ishouldsaythatbeingtogetherwithourbestfriendsisthemostwonderfulmomentofourlives.

Asweknow,wewouldfeellonelyifwedidntevenhaveafriend.Butitdoesntmeanwecoulddependonourfriendsallthetime.Thereisafamousmottosayingthat“Afriendislikeaquiltwithcottonwadding,buttherealthingthatkeepsyouwarmisyourowntemperature.”Itisreallytrue.Wehavetoworkhardtogetherwithourfriends,encourageeachotherandhelpeachother.Whenwereceiveloveandfriendship,weshouldrepayasmuchaswecan.

In20--IwasinYushuduringthatterribleearthquake.Ie*periencedthefullhorrorofbuildingsfallingandpeoplebeingtrapped.Iwitnessedthequickresponsefrommoderntechnologywhenpeopleinsideyushucalledpeopleoutsideforhelpwiththeirmobilephones.Verysoonthewholeworldwasrespondingwholeheartedly.Afteronly5hours,therewasanothersound-thistimeitwashelicoptersbringingdoctors,medicalsupplies,andthefacilitiestoevacuatethewoundedtohospital.

Recentadvancesinearthquakedetectionandrescuetechnologyhavebeendevelopedinresponsetotheneedtosavelivesquickly.

Consideradvancesingreenfoodtechnology,guidedbytheneedforcleannaturalfoodandtoprotecttheenvironment;

Advancesinwaterconservationandpurification,guidedbytheneedforcleandrinkingwaterandforcropsandlivestock;

advancesindeliveringeducationtoeveryone,especiallytheuseofvideoandtheinternetfordistancelearning;

advancesinmedicine,especiallyaffordablemedicineforAIDSsufferersinAfrica;

WhenIthinkabouttheworldofadvancedtechnologytoday,Ithinkofmyhome,theremoteandharshenvironmentoftheTibetanPlateau,andfarmerslivingintentswithsolarenergythattheyusetopowertheirlights,TV,computersandtoimprovetheirlifestyle.Ithinkoffarmerstalkingontheirmobilephones,discussingtheweatherpatterns,thecostoffood,communitynewsandevents.TheyeventalkaboutSteveJobs.ThetraintoLhasa,itselfawonderfulengineeringfeat,bringsmodernmedicineandeducationtotheseremoteareas.Thecommunitiesarenowinterlinkedandconnected,oneofthemostbasichumanneeds.

Humanbeingshaveaneedtobeconnected,tobesafetobecaredforintimesoftroubleandhardship.

Thedevelopmentoftechnologymustbeguidedbytheseneeds.Ifthisisnotso,thenthedevelopmentoftechnologyisinthehandsofmeanand,greedypeople.Thefocusoftechnologicaldevelopmentwouldbewarsandweapons,fraudthemisuseofinformation,andthee*ploitationofpeople,suchascheaplabor.

Letmetellyouwhattouchedmyheartthiswinterbreak,onemorningwhenIvisitedmygrandmotherinthehospital.Walkingdownthecold,tiledcorridor,Inoticedanoldman,withhisgranddaughter–maybe10yearsold–sittingbyhisside.Iwasluredtherebyhervoice–lightandplayful–andafterIdseenthemtogether,Icouldbarelytakemyeyesaway.Delicatelydrapedoverthisoldmansbeepingcardiographwasasilksheetwithanancient,cheerfulChinesepoembeautifullywrittenonit–andnow,thislittlegirlsentrancingvoicelovinglybroughtthesewordstolife.Istoodtheretransfi*ed;nolongerdidIseethefamilymembersswimminginnervousness;nolongerdidIfeelthehospitalstensecloudofan*iety;nolongerdidIhearmortalityssoftwhispersinthecorridors;instead,Isawastartlingmarriageofju*taposingimagesandemotions.Iwasbeholding,Irealized,abewilderinglysimpleyetoverwhelminglypowerfulmetaphor–onethatshowsthatnomatterhowcoldanenvironmenttechnologycanconjure,humanityisalwaysthere.Intheforefrontorthefringes,itisalwaysthere.
