2014studylacksfirmevidence.Inthenewstudy,the

teamunearthedthearchaeologicalsiteof

Tianluoshan,a7,000-year-oldricecultivationvillageinthelower

YangtzeRivervalleyinwhatistodayknownasEastChina,s

Zhejiangprovince.Theyfoundatotalof232goosebonesatthe

site.Theinhabitantsofthevillagewerehunter-gatherers.

Theresearchersusedmultipleapproachestostudythebones,

andfoundevidenceofdomestication.

Fourboneswerefromgoslings(幼鵝)rangingfromeightto

16weeksold,suggestingtheyhatchednearthesite.Geesewere

domesticatedfromwildgeese.Thesemigratorybirdsflyto

northernSiberiatobreed(繁殖)afterthespringandthenfly

southforthewinter,accordingtoresearchersfromtheZhejiang

ProvincialInstituteofCulturalRelicsandArchaeology.Theysaid

thegoslingsweretooyoungtohaveflowninfromelsewhere.At

thetime,Tianluoshandidnothavetheconditionstobeanatural

breedingplaceforwildgeese,soitfollowsthatthegoslings

werebornafterdomestication.

Theresearchersalsoanalyzedthechemicalmakeupofadult

goosebones,whichcontainedevidenceofthewatertheydrank.

Theiranalysisindicatedthattheadultgeesealsoseemedtohave

beenlocallybred,fortheywereallroughlythesame

size.Carbondatingalsoshowedthatthebonesbelongedto

geesethatlivedabout7,000yearsago.
