ThomasJeffersonwasbornonApril13,1743inAlbemaleCounty,Virginia.Whenhewas14,heinheritedhisfather'sestateandslaves.Soonafter,JeffersonattendedtheCollegeofWilliamandMary.

In1769,whenhewasjust26,JeffersonwaselectedtotheVirginiaHouseofRepresentatives.In1772,Jeffersonbeganbuildinghishome,Monticello.In1770,hemarriedMarthaWaylesShelton.

AsamemberofthesecondContinentalCongress,JeffersondraftedTheDeclarationofIndependence.In1779,hewaselectedasgovernorofVirginia.Althoughheresignedin1781,duringhistermasgovernor,JeffersonwrotethefamousVirginiaStatuteforReligiousFreedom.Jefferson'swritingsalsoformedthebasisoftheOrdinancesof1784,1785,and1787.From1785-1789,JeffersonservedasministertoFrance.In1789,GeorgeWashingtonappointedhimSecretaryofState.

Duetopoliticaldifferencesconcerningtheroleofthegovernmentwithothercabinetmembers,JeffersonresignedasSecretaryofStatein1793.Jeffersonsoonranforpresident,butwasdefeatedin1796byJohnAdams.Nevertheless,hewasappointedvicepresident.AlthoughJeffersonandAaronBurrreceivedequalelectoralvotesforpresidency,JeffersonwaselectedpresidentbytheHouseofRepresentativesin1800.DuringJefferson'sterm,boththeLouisianaPurchaseandtheLewisandClarkExpeditionoccurred.Jeffersonservedtwopresidentialterms.HelaterestablishedtheUniversityofVirginia.HediedonJuly4,1826,the50thanniversaryofTheDeclarationofIndependence.Coincidentally,JohnAdamsdiedonthesameday.
