Theworldartmarkethadalreadybeenlosingmomentumforawhileafterrising
bewilderinglysince2003.Atitspeakin2007itwasworthsome$65billion,reckons
ClareMcAndrew,founderofArtsEconomics,aresearchfirmdoublethefigurefive
yearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedownto$50billion.Butthemarket
generatesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,
enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversymawaymatchedbyfewother
industries.
IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMr.Hirst'ssale,spendinqofaeysort
becamedeeplyunfashionable.Intheartworldthatmeantcollectorsstayedawayfrom
