TheFrenchRevolutionbrokeoutin1789.AtthetimeFrancewasinacrisis.Thegovernmentwas

badlyrunandpeople'slivesweremiserable.KingLouisXIVtriedtocontrolthenationalparliamentand

raisemoretaxes.Buthiseffortfailed.HeorderedhistroopstoVersailles.ThepeoplethoughtthatLouis

intendedtoputdowntheRevolutionbyforce.OnJuly14,1789,theystormedandtooktheBastille,where

politicalprisonerswerekept.Eversincethatday,July14hasbeentheFrenchNationalDay.Louistriedto

fleethecountryin1792togetsupportfromAustriaandPrussia.However,hewascaughtandputin

prison.InSeptember1792,themonarchywasabolished.Inthesameyear,Louiswasexecuted.Afew

monthslaterhiswife,Mariealsohadherheadcutoff.TheRevolutionofFrancehadfrightenedtheother

kingsofEurope.ArmiesfromAustriaandPrussiabegantomarchagainstFrance.TheFrenchraised

republicanarmiestodefendthenation.TheRevolutionwentthroughaperiodofterror.Thousandsof
