thatsomeplantswillscreamwhentheyareunderstress.

Theresearchwascarriedoutontomatoplantsandtobaccoplantsbycuttingtheir

stems（莖）anddepriving（錄U奪）themofwater.Amicrophonewasplaced10cmawayfrom

them.Whentheirstemswerecut,theplantsstarted"screaming"between20and100kilohertz,

andthescientistsguessthatthisscreamisprobablymeanttowarnotherplantsnearby.

Whenthetomatoplants*stemswerecut,25ultrasonic（超聲的）painsoundswere

recordedinanhour,andatthesametime,15ultrasonicpainsoundswererecordedfromthe

tobaccoplants.Whentheyweredeprivedofwater,thetomatoplantsrecordedevenmorepain

soundswith35painsoundsinanhourwhilethetobaccoplantsrecordedabout11pain

sounds.
