J:Well,itseemsthattheeasiestwayofdisposingoftrashisbyburyingitinlandfills.Theproblemisthatinmanycountriesthelandfillshavealreadybeenfilledup,andit’shardtofindplacestostartnewones.Noonewantsahugelandfillanywhereneartheirneighborhood.

M:Sowhat’sthesolution?

J:Well,thereisnoeasysolution.Butmanycitiesaretryingtodomorerecyclingsothattheycanreducetheamountofstuffthatgoesintothelandfills.

A:Well,thesunhasneverbeengoodforyou,butit’sreallydangerousnow.Yousee,theozonosphere,whichhelpsprotectusfromthesun’sultravioletrays,hasbeendamagedbypollutionintheair.Whentheozonelayergetstoothin,itcancauseanincreaseinskincancerandotherproblems.

W:Butisthereanythingwecandotosolvetheproblem?

A:Sure.Oneofthebiggestthreatstotheozonelayeriscars–theexhaustgasesfromcars.Thebestwaytosavetheozonelayeristodriveless.Soinmanyplaces,peoplearebeingaskedtocarpool.

K:Youknow,youalwayshearaboutairpollution,butnotmanypeopleareawareoftheproblemofwaterpollution.

M:Youmeanintheoceans?

K:No.Imeanpolluteddrinkingwater.It’saprobleminalmosteverymajorcityintheworld.Almostallourriversandlakes–wherewegetourdrinkingwaterfrom–arebeingpollutedinsomewaybybusinessesfarms,homes,industries,andothersources.Andeventhoughthewatermostofusdrinkistreated,it’sstillnot100percentpure.

M:Sowhat’sthesolution?

K:Well,it’sacomplicatedproblemtosolve,butbasicallywhat’sinvolvedistreatingallwasteproductsmorecarefullysothatdangerouschemicalsandbacteriadon’tgetintoourwatersupply.
