SpecialNeedsFamilies(OSNF)inmyneighborhoodsoIcouldapplyandfurtherdevelopmy
childcareskills.IwaspartneredwithMatthew,a1O-year-oldwithcurlyblondhairandblueeyes.
Hedidn^lookdifferentfromotherkids,buthehaddifficultycontrollinghisemotions,especially
anger.Hisbiggestproblemwasthathecouldn'tgotothetoilethimself.EverydayIhadtoclean
uphismessifhepoopedinhispants.Itwasjustlikethe“goodolddays“withmylittlebrother
beforeIsuccessfullytoilet-trainedhim.
AlthoughIwasnevergoingtobeabletotoilet-trainMatthewIwasabletochangehislifein
anotherway.Wehadswimmingthreetimesaweek,butMatthewwashopelesslyafraidofthe
water.Atfirst,Matthewjustsatonthestepsofthepoolanddidnothing.Ipushedhimslowly
downthestairsuntilhewasatlaststandingintheshallowestpartofthepool.Thenextday,I
pushedhimalittlefurtherintothewater.Bythethirdday,hecompletelytrustedmetotakehim
intothepool.Maybemylargesizealsohelpedgivehimasenseofsecurity.Hedidnothavetobe
afraidofanythingwhena200-poundguywasholdinghimtight.IfeltsoproudasIsawhim
standingthereinthepool,happilyplayingwithotherkidsinthewater.TheOSNFadultleaders
toldmethatIwastheonlyvolunteerwhohadbeenabletotakecareofMatthewwell.Ithinkwhat
madethedifferenceisthebeliefIhadinMatthew,likehowIhadalwaysbelievedinmylittle
