TheChineseNewYearcelebrationinSanFranciscoChinatownandotherChineseAmericancommunitiesshouldnotbeinterpretedasdirecttransplantsofChineseculture.Duetodifferencesintheirsocialenvironmentandphysicallimitations,theselocalcelebrationshavedevelopedspecialcharacteristicsoftheirown.AlongwitholdcustomsimporteddirectlyfromChina,theChinatowncelebrationsalsocontainadaptationsfromotherculturesintheUnitedStates.

ThefirstpointtobenoticedincomparingtheChinatowncelebrationsoftodaytothatdescribedintheproceedingsectionisthattheyhavebeenshortenedorsimplified.ChineseAmericanstoresinthiscountrydonotcloseforaweektocelebrate,norisislikelythataChineseAmericancouldtaketwoweeksofffromwork.Therefore,manyofthefestivitieshavebeenadaptedfortheeveningsortheweekends.Thisincludesthesocialvisits,thefamilydinners,andeventheChinatownparade,whichisalwaysheldonaSaturday.InmanyChineseAmericanhomes,theannualhousecleaningisstilldoneatNewYear’stime.SpringCoupletscanbeseeninChinatownstoreseverywhere,butthesearenowboughtfromtheChineseHospitalasafundraisingeffort-aninterestingvariationonanoldChinesecustom.

InadditiontotheSpringCouplets,theChinatownliondanceshavealsobeenpromotedasafundraisingeventfortheChineseHospital.IntheearlierdaysofChinatown,liondanceswererelativelyrare.Inthe1920’s,afundraisingprogramwasstartedwherebyliondancerswouldgofromstoretostoretodanceandwishthemluck.Inreturn,storekeeperswouldgiveLai-seepacketswhichweredonatedtotheChineseHospital.

TheChinatownparadeisabendoftypicalAmericanmarchingparadesandthetraditionalLanternFestival.AlthoughthedragondanceisadoptedfromtheChinesecelebration,therestoftheChinatownparade,includingthebeautypageant,floats,andmarchingbands,wasobviouslyinspiredbynon-Chinesemodels.Theparadewasfirststartedin1953bytheChineseChamberofCommerceandhassinceattractedthousandsofspectatorseachyear.

FamilyAssociations

SomeChinatownfestivitiesalsoreflecttheearlierhistoryofChineseAmericans.Priortothepresentgeneration,theChineseAmericancommunitywasessentiallyabachelorsociety.RestrictiveimmigrationlawshadmadeitextremelydifficultforChinesefamiliestoimmigratetotheUnitedStates.Asaresult,mostChineseAmericansinthepastwerenotabletoholdfamilydinnersatNewYear’stime.Inplaceofthefamilybanquets,ChinatowndevelopedauniquetraditionofSpringBanquetshostedbythe"familyassociations"incertainChineserestaurants.TheseSpringBanquets,originallydevelopedtotaket
