Or if module based wood composite buildings with intelligent features will enable better life in our homes? What we do know is that renewable mat
7、erials have the power to push sustainability and better life forward.New challenges for paper and board researchWhat are the big challenges in research that still have to be met? Havent all the big discoveries already been made in such a mature branch as the forest products industry? The answer is n
8、o, mankind is always creating new needs and there are always new ways of getting a good paper surface.More multi-colour printing, new digital printing techniques, higher printing speeds, new functional demands on fibre-based packagings are some of examples of current and future challenges for the re
9、search within Stora Enso. Another challenge is biotechnology that still hasnt reached its major breakthroughs. Biotechnology and enzymes can be used to make the process more environmentally friendly and reduce energy consumption. Enzymes can also be used to make a smoother paper surface instead of t
10、raditional coating. These challenges all in all open up for new perspectives and create demands for new kind of research specialists. Not only technology scientists but also behavioural and perception expertise to mention a few. No growth without research Research is one of Stora Ensos core competen
11、cies and a strategic resource for short as well as long term development. Stora Enso would never have become one the worlds major forest products companies without succesful research. The research at Stora Enso has a number of different goals: How can paper work together with or instead of other pac
12、kaging materials, for example plastics? How can paper be put to new uses in the packaging industry or the media industry? But also how production can be made more efficient and become leaner in utilising resources.The research projects being started now are directly linked to Stora Ensos business st
13、rategy and they will be evaluated wholly on the basis of what business value they have created. One important reason for this functional structure of research and development is to forge clear and strong links with the customers and markets. Research and development is carried out at a number of dif
14、ferent levels within Stora Enso. The different mills are responsible for maintaining production technology and their product portfolios. More innovative projects, for example improved products or the installation of a new paper machine, are carried out in close collaboration between the Groups joint
15、 research operation, our three Research Centres, and the mills. Whats coming up in paper?Will the papers of the future be a lot different to todays papers? Will we see new materials with new, exciting characteristics? Or is paper a mature product that doesnt offer much scope for improvement? The fut
16、ure will probably not be full of revolutionary discoveries. It will be more a case of evolution, an ongoing process of improvement and adding a finishing touch.R&D is a key area of competence at Stora Enso. Some 350 people work at the companys three Research Centreswhich are located in Karlstad, Swe
17、den; Imatra, Finland; and Mnchengladbach, Germany. The centres coordinate with the product development departments at the mills, and also support the technical customer service sections of the sales companies.At present, R&D is concentrated on aspects like the surface of the paper, raw materials, ru

21、ns for our customers.Product focused resources for enhanced value creationThe improvement of existing products and production processes, and the development of new products and services to customers are the key drivers for Research and Development (R&D) within Stora Enso. Our R&D efforts are market
22、driven and managed as an integrated part of the companys business. The aim is to create business excellence for Stora Enso by creating value through science, technology, and innovations. Research activities are based upon close co-operation between customers, production units and Research Centres, t
23、o provide services that require scientific and technical sophistication and advanced equipment. R&D resources are organised in product groups for Printing & Reading, Reneweable Packaging and Building & Living respectively. Each group is responsible for the planning and implementation of programmes a
24、nd for developing the capabilities required to achieve the R&D goals. Each group covers the entire value chain from raw material, paper and board manufacturing, print quality, pressroom runnability, and converting with special focus on our customers value chains. To keep abreast of the latest resear
25、ch and to ensure an influx of new ideas, we maintain close contacts with a wide network of universities, institutes, and other R&D organizations. Development in the first stages of the value chain, e.g. machine technology, is performed in close co-operation with our suppliers and collaborating resea
26、rch institutes, whereas our in-house R&D focuses on integrating technologies and functionalities into new materials and customer-oriented solutions. R&D - a resource for Stora Ensos customersPublication Paper is the common name for Stora Ensos newsprint and magazine papers. These papers are used for
27、 newspapers, magazines, catalogues, and direct mail in large quantities. The customers have strong demands on printability, runnability, and support. Stora Enso offers customers excellent support within product development, fine-tuning of the printing process, and trouble-shooting. Support is suppli
28、ed in close co-operation between Research Centres, mills, technical customer service, and the sales and marketing organization. The Research Centres have expertisealong the entire value chain from raw materials and paper manufacturing to print quality and press room runnability. At our disposal we h
29、ave state-of-the-art laboratories and pilot equipment at our mills and in the Research Centres in Karlstad, Sweden,and in Mnchengladbach, Germany. Fine Paper R&D with focus on product performanceUnderstanding the customers value chain and business environment is essential to being able to offer the
30、best possible services and products. Its true for all products, and especially for fine paper where rapid technical development and the continuously changing world creates new challenges for the development of fine paper products. Fine Paper R&D is located at two sites in Finland and in Sweden, besi
31、des which each mill also has its own R&D resources. The main focus for Fine Paper R&D is end-use performance, but our expertise covers the whole chain from wood raw material to converting ready made products.The laboratories are well equipped with the latest technology and we run our own full-sized
32、modern production presses for product improvements and product development. Research activities are mainly focused on printing methods (offset and digital), converting and finishing of printed products, coating and calandering of paper, and paper making and raw materials. 33、new customer needs and end-use functionalityStora Enso Packaging Boards produces materials for packaging applications: papers for labels and pouches, consumer packaging boards, graphical boards, and corrugated boxes for consumer goods as well as for industrial packaging. Wood forestWood & forest Stora Enso procures most of its wood from private forest owners, state forests and companies in Finland, Sweden, the Baltic states, Continental Europe and Russia. Around 6% of the wood is from tree plantations in the South
40、ern Hemisphere. Stora Enso supports sustainable forestry management. We provide assistance to forest owners on how to manage their forestlands sustainably.We only use wood from sustainable sourcesWood is our most important raw material. 45、ing certification of forests wherever we operateForest certification is a method that forest owners, the forest industry and the entire production chain for products made from wood can use to show consumers that products are made of wood from well managed forests. A well managed forest is one in whi
46、ch forestry is ecologically, socially and economically sustainable.Forest certification labelsMany forest industry products carry a label stating that they are produced using wood from certified forests. Independent nonprofit organisations develop and manage such forest certification schemes in part
47、nership with a wide range of stakeholders, of which Stora Enso is one.Committed to forest certificationToday close to 70% of Stora Ensos wood comes from certified forests, and this figure is increasing all the time. Globally, however, less than 10% of the worlds forests are certified.Supporting cert
48、ification schemesThere are two major forest certification schemes, the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC). Stora Enso is committed to both FSC and PEFC and sees there is a need for both systems. Stora Enso helps increase fore
49、st certification by working with both certification systems and stakeholders.Being sure of the origin of our woodRegardless of whether or not the wood we use comes from certified forests, it always originates from sustainable sources. We know the origin of all of the wood we use thanks to our tracea

51、itions wood origin data mapping systems and databases internal and external audits.From forest to productChain-of-custody shows that a product is made of wood originating from certified forests. Chain-of-custody documents the journey of wood from a certified forest to the final product on the shelf.
52、 Products containing wood from certified forests may carry the forest certification logo if their chain-of-custody has been verified by an external auditor.Old-growth forestStora Enso is committed to protecting and restoring old-growth forests and we have supported many multi-stakeholder processes t
53、o do so, especially in Northern Finland. We do not purchase wood from protected areas, old-growth forests or high conservation value forests, as defined in national stakeholder processes.An old-growth forest is characterised by a combination of very old and large trees, vast amounts of decaying wood
54、 and large species composition relative to the surrounding ecosystem. Defining old-growth forestsThere are numerous other definitions for old-growth forests. Old growth is an ecosystem-specific condition and must be identified using local criteria. In each region, we apply definitions that have been
55、 agreed upon in national stakeholder processes where representatives from a wide range of interest groups have participated.
