2、1-12197上課時間：週二上午9:10-12:00課程綱要：This course has two main sections: the history and teaching of Comparative Literature. The first section is a study of the history of Comparative Literature. Attention will be given to the origins, development and current situation of the French School of Comparative L

3、iterature and then to the history and current situation of Comparative Literature in Germany and England. (Other European countries can be studied too if requested by students.) The American School will be studied next, tracing the development of Comparative Literature there in the second half of th

4、e twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on explaining why Comparatists in the United States introduced to the field various new approachess, such as interdisciplinary studies, genders studies, and New Historicism. Next will be a study of Comparative Literature in Asia, with the history of Compa

5、rative Literature in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China as the major focus. Of particular interest will be what has been called the Chinese School of Comparative Literature. Also to be reviewed in this section are international and national comparative literature associations.The second part of t

6、his course will deal with the teaching of Comparative Literature. First, how Comparative Literature is currently being taught in Europe will be studied, followed by a look at the teaching of Comparative Literature in major American universities. Then, the Chinese Mainland will be considered, particu

7、larly the teaching of Comparative Literature at important Mainland universities. Once we have an understanding of the teaching of Comparative Literature in other countries, we will then review how it is taught in Taiwan and begin to design general and specialized courses on Comparative Literature th

8、at might be appropriate to be used in Taiwan on the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is hoped that students in this course will be able to teach an undergraduate course related to Comparative Literature while still a doctoral student.If possible, during the semester, there will be a trip to Mai

10、ginning. At first, the focus was on the image of one European country in another; later, French comparatists expanded this kind of study to the image of Asian countries in Europe. This course will focus on the image of China in European and American literature. The first part will be a survey coveri

11、ng how China appeared in Classical Latin and Greek texts (1st Century BC-6th Century AD), Medieval European texts, 16th-Century Portuguese and Spanish texts, and 17th- and 18th-century French and English texts. Beginning with the 17th-century, most of the emphasis will be on literary texts.The secon

12、d part of this course will be first a survey of the image of China in 19th- and 20th-century European and American literature, and then a detailed study of particular works depending on the interest of the students. In this part of the course there will also be extensive discussions on various metho

13、dologies that can be used in image studies.The topic for the research paper will be decided shortly after the middle of the semester; and students will be expected to turn in this paper by the end of the semester. During the second half of the semester, students will make regular reports related to
