As I got older I began doing random ( 隨意的 ) things for people. For example, during holidays, such as Christmas, I would make an extra 41 along with the ones for my relatives. Then I would go and find someone in the grocery store and just hand it to them and walk away. It was so much fun. I admit, 42 , the first time I did it I was so 43 . I didnt know who to give the card to. So I said a little prayer and knew that the 44 person would just appear. About that time an elderly man ran 45 me with his shopping cart. It was an accident, and he 46 a million times. We smiled and he walked away, and I knew that he was the one. Later I found him in a different isle(過(guò)道), handed him the card, and smiled. I said Happy Holidays, and then walked away. It was so great, and the 47 I had afterwards was unexplainable. Then one day I came across yourwebsite (the coolestwebsite ever) and 48 some Smile Cards. When they came in, I started a new project. When I go into a store, I locate a person who I think needs a 49 . Then, I buy a flower, a carnation, to be exact, and 50 it in the most beautiful paper they have. I tie lots of ribbons on it to make it 51 , and then slip the smile card into an envelope and 52 it to the flower. After that, I pay for it and explain to the cashier 53 it is to go to (I live in a pretty small town so its easy to get the help of the cashiers). They then give it to that person when they come through. Once in a while Ill buy the flower and then just leave it for the cashier. That gets smiles. My favorite time was when I picked out this elderly woman who was walking around the 54 somewhat confused. I had come across her numerous times and she only smiled slightly once. When she came to the check out (I was watching from outside) her face 55 and the smile was the biggest I had ever seen. Later that week the cashier whom I had had 56 me told me that the lady had been so surprised and while she was walking out with the grocery bag to her car, she was planning what she was going to do for someone else. It was amazing.I absolutely love the random acts of kindness cards. I 57 at least two in my purse and others in my car, locker and everywhere I go. As I mentioned, my club, STARS, is doing a Random Acts of Kindness Project with the smile cards so they also are using them. I look forward to hearing about their success. Its really great. I 58 used them in school. I bought my entire math class cans of pop after lunch one day. They came in from lunch and a can of pop and a smile card were setting 59 that day. It totally lightened the mood in the class that day 60 we were studying for a test. Thank you for all of the help that you provide. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he bounced(跳) happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself staring at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as his. He smiled a great smile, and was answered with 1,000 great smiles just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself, “ This is a wonderful place. I will come back and visit often.” In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the first one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the door. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly looking dogs staring back at him, he growled at them and was horrified to see 1,000 little dogs growling back at him. As he left, he thought to himself, “This is a horrible place, and I will never go back there again.”All the faces in the world are mirrors. What kind of reflections do you see on the faces of the people you meet? 61. Why did the first dog like the house?A. Because there were 1,000 mirrors in the house.B. Because he thought he could keep himself warm in the house.C. Because he liked everything presented to him.D. Because he felt he was welcome here.62. The underlined word “ growl” probably means _.A. make an unfriendly noise B. smile C. say hello D. stare63. The passage tells us _.A. we must look at ourselves in a mirror as often as possibleB. we must look at ourselves in a mirror like the first little dogC. We can see other people on our facesD. we are treated in the same way as we treat other people64. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?A. A Small happy Little Dog B. The House of 1,000 MirrorsC. The Wonderful Place and the Horrible Place. D. Two Little DogsBWe recently read a report on Chinas environmental problems, based on reports from Singapores Straits Times. There was one statistic that shocked us. Environmental experts claim that without some great change, pollution might, within five years, make the Yangtze River just about unsuitable for all forms of life to live in. The baiji, or the Yangtze River dolphin, was only the latest victim. According to the first report, in the 1980s there were 126 forms of life in the river, and by 2002, that figure was already down to 52. Just how bad is the situation? The Yangtze River flows by 186 cities on its way from Qinghai to Shanghai, and in the process picks up 40% of Chinas polluted waste water. According to another report, in 2006, China produced a total of 53.7 billion tons of waste water. But thats not the worst news. By 2030, China might possibly use up between 89-100% of its sources of drinking water. All of this begs a deeper question: What kind of water are they using when they pump 10 kilos of water into pigs headed for the slaughterhouse(屠宰場(chǎng))? This is an important question because if its waste water is not fit for human to drink, theres a chance that some of whatever was in that water was in the pork you had for lunch today. And if the water is safe to drink, thats a waste of perfectly good water. Another report we read, related to the Taihu algae(水藻) blooming that has left 3 million people in the Wuxi area without drinking water, claims(quite believably) that Taihus environmental problems will never end until all the factories along the lake close down. The algae bloom is so bad there that lots of people have to take the algae out of the lake all day long instead of fishing. 65. From the first paragraph we learn that_. A. this passage is taken from Singapores Straits Times B. over 70 species of life disappeared from the Yangtze River in about 20 years C. there were only 52Yangtze River dolphins left in the river in 2002 D. you will see no life in the Yangtze River in the coming five years or so 66. Which of the following statements is NOT true about the Yangtze River according to the passage? A. It goes by 186 cities on its way from the source to the sea. B. Lots of waste water in the country is poured into the river. C. The baiji in the river is now in danger of extinction. D. We can hardly see any forms of life in the river now.67. Which of the following problems is the most important according to the passage? A. There is no clean water to pump into pigs which are to be slaughtered. B. A large amount of waste water is produced every year in China. C. The sources of drinking water might be almost used up in the future. D. There are poisonous things in the pork that people eat. 68. It can be concluded from the last paragraph that_. A. the factories along the lake have contributed to the pollution B. fishermen have taken up the job of cleaning the lake. C. all the factories in Wuxi have been shut down to protect the lake. D. many people are sent to the lake to help protect the algae. C The right to pursue happiness is issued to us all with our birth, but no one seems quite sure what it is. A holy man in India may think that happiness is in himself. It is in needing nothing from outside himself. In wanting nothing, he lacks nothing. We westerners, however, are taught that the more we have from outside ourselves, the happier we will be, and then we are made to want. We are even told it is our duty to want. Advertising, one of our major industries, exists not to satisfy these desires but to create them-and to create them faster than any mans money in his pocket can satisfy them. Here, obviously someone is trying to buy the dream of happiness and spending millions upon millions every year in the attempt. Clearly the happiness-market is not running out of customers. I doubt the holy mans idea of happiness, and I doubt the dreams of the happiness-market, too. Whatever happiness may be, I believe, it is neither in having nothing nor in having more, but in changing-in changing the world and mankind into pure states. To change is to make efforts to deal with difficulties. As Yeats, a great Irish poet once put it, happiness we get for a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties. Robert Frost, a great American poet, was thinking in almost the stone terms when he spoke of the pleasure of taking pains. It is easy to understand. We even demand difficulty for the fun in our games. We demand it because without difficulty there can be no game. And a game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it. The rules of the game are man-made difficulties. When the player ruins the fun, he always does so by refusing to play by the roles. It is easier to win at chess if you are free, at your pleasure, to cast away all the rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules. The same is true to happiness. The buyers and sellers at the happines
