I always do my homework. I dont want Mrs. Palmquist to be upset with me and I like to get good grades in school. There is a student in our class who never does his homework. His name is Bobby. He always says that he forgot what to do. None of us understood why he didnt do his homework. It wasnt hard and it didnt take long to complete. The week before our winter break, Mrs. Palmquist gave us homework passes,so we did not have to do homework one night without any trouble. Some of us were surprised when Mrs. Palmquist gave Bobby a homework pass. Why would she give him one? Bobby didnt do his homework and he was being rewarded (獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)). That wasnt fairThe next day Bobby didnt come to school. Mrs. Palmquist told us that Bobby had been very sick. He went to the doctors, but it didnt work. Then he was put in the hospital so that they could help him get better. We were all very sad. The class decided to help Bobby with his homework problem. During our free time we made Bobby cards. Each card had a special gift inside. Every student gave Bobby his or her homework pass. Mrs. Palmquist had tears in her eyes when she realized what we had done. She told us that she was very proud of our actions and cancelled homework for one week. A few months later, Bobby returned to school. He was better. The doctors helped cure Bobby of his illness. Every day after his return, Bobby completed his homework. He didnt need our gifts after all. Mrs. Palmquist told us that he used our passes every day when he was sick. I learned a lot in Mrs. Palmquists class that year. My mom says I learned more than I realized. Adults sure are funny! 48. The writer does her homework every day _. A Sick Student B. The Special Gift C. A Funny Teacher D. Bobbys Homework Passes(C) Its hard to believe how times have changed since the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, on 6th April 1896. One hundred years ago, there was very little reliance (dependence) on modern technology. There were no landing mats (海綿墊), no stopwatches and no photo finishes. In fact, cameras and stopwatches were not used until the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. Today technology has completely revolutionized (changed) sports. Take sports equipment (裝備) for example. Starting blocks are now equipped with electronic pressure sensors, which, together with digital cameras, provide exactly correct race time and also help to catch runners who “jump the gun”. As athletes cross the finishing line, special digital cameras can also easily decide the winner. The days of “dead heats” are gone. Athletes have also benefited (受益) from technological developments. Body-hugging suits, which reduce (減少) wind drag, can help cut up to one-tenth of a second from runners race times. Top athletes are even provided with tailor-made sports shoes. These shoes are made to fit the athlete exactly - and there are even air compartments in the shoes that can be filled to meet each runners individual needs. Technology has also changed the way that many sports are performed. Take one example - the pole vault (撐桿跳). The inclusion of a landing mat obviously made a big difference to the vaulting style (方式) as athletes no longer needed to worry about hurting themselves as they fell. Without these worries, athletes could obviously jump higher. These days, pole vaulters do not even need to worry about the crossbar as the uprights are now fitted with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that measure (測(cè)量) how high the athlete vaulted. Even it has been to the advantage of swimmers. New pools have been designed to reduce wave interference and sports scientists have even developed a new style of swimming that increases buoyancy and reduces drag in the water. The increasing importance of these technological developments has led many sportsmen to suggest that the “Olympic spirit” is being lost in a rush to break records and win medals. Many developing countries say that technology has become too important in sport and that athletes from developing countries that cannot afford such technology are disadvantaged. There are no easy answers but one thing is sure - we cannot turn back times. Technology cannot go backwards. 52. How many pieces of high-tech sports equipment are mentioned in Paragraph 2 and 3?A. One.B. Two. C. Four.D. Five.53. The underlined phrase “dead heats” means _. A. sports equipment which was out of date B. runners who jumped the gun while running C. diseases which killed runners in hot weather D. races in which runners finished at the same time 54. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph? A. LEDs can measure the speed of swimming.B. The pole vault was not quite safe in the past. C. Pole vaulters jump higher with landing mats.D. New pools have changed the style of swimming. 55. The purpose of the writer in writing this article is _. A. to suggest we should keep up with the times B. to show us the future of modern Olympics C. to prove that the athletes have done better D. to introduce high-tech sports equipment 語言知識(shí)運(yùn)用 (共17分)二、根據(jù)對(duì)話內(nèi)容,用方框中所給單詞的適當(dāng)形式填空。(共7分,每空1分)policeman, mother, have, big, sell, friend, doCarl: Hi. Only a week later, it saved his life. He was hit by a car while riding home from school in Tucson, Arizona. His bike was broken into pieces in the accident. But Sean was alive. His helmet protected him from serious head injury (負(fù)傷). “I used to think helmets were unnecessary. I thought I would never get hurt,” Sean said. “But it can and will happen to you if youre not careful.” Sean later spoke before the Tucson City Council about the need of bike-helmet laws. This led to a new Arizona law that requires people under the age of 18 to wear a bike helmet while cycling.Fifteen-year-old Mike Jones of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, knows about safety. Two years ago, he was seriously hurt in a car accident. Mike hurt his head badly when he was thrown from a van. “I dont know why I didnt wear a safety belt that day. Now I always wear it,” Mike said. Today, he can still think of that experience. “I used to love sports, but I cant do them anymore. I cant risk (冒險(xiǎn)) getting another serious injury,” he said.Like Mike, many people around the U.S. are becoming more safety-wise. “Parents cant watch kids every minute. Kids must know how to be safe. Its in their control and power,” says Susan Gallagher, director of the Safety Network.New technology is also helping to prevent injuries. More people than ever before use products such as fire alarms in their homes and seat belts in their cars. Most cyclists know that they should use bike helmets. New laws, such as the bike-helmet law Sean Aiken helped pass, are also making more people use these products. The number of serious injuries caused by car accidents and fires has gone down over the years.Kids are taking action to help prevent injuries. Like Sean Aiken and Mike Jones, they know that safety works. 1. Did the helmet save Se
