Thedefiningdecade

AsthisVisionforthefutureofMan-MadeCellulosicFibres(MMCF)isbeingwritten,wefacean

unprecedentedpandemicthathascatalysedaglobalsocio-economiccrisis.

Thissitsinthecontextofalmostinevitablefutureglobal

disruptionsasweracetolimitglobalwarmingtoamaximumof1.5°C,bringtoahaltthesixthmassextinction,andtackle

inequality,factionalismandincreasinglyvulnerablelivelihoods.

Thedecisionswemaketodayarecriticalinbuildingour

socio-economicresilienceandregeneratingoursocialandnaturalsystemssothatweavoidorreducethelikelihoodofthesefutureshocks.Humanityfacesanexistentialrace

againsttime.

TheVisionweoutlinehereistheMMCFindustry’sresponsetothisunprecedentedcalltoaction.

TheroleoftheMMCFvaluechain

MMCFsuchasViscose/Rayon,Lyocell,ModalandCuproconstitutethesecondmostimportantgroupofcellulosicfibresaftercotton,withanannualproductionvolumeofaround6.7milliontonsannually-orapproximately6.2%ofthetotalfibreproductionvolume.1PriortoCOVID-19,MMCFvolumeswereexpectedtoincreaserapidlyoverthenext15years,

possiblyreaching10milliontonsannually.2

TheMMCFvaluechainhasthepotentialtotacklesomeoftheapparelandbroadertextileindustry’smostsignificantsustainabilitychallengesand,asaconsequence,makeaveryrealcontributiontobuildingresilienceandaccelerating

regeneration.Itsuniqueprospectsforrealisingcircularfashion,forinstance,contrastsharplywiththelinearmodelsof

economicgrowththathaveleftmanyofourecosystemsonthevergeofcollapse.Asaderivativeofwoodpulpandother

naturalplantmaterials,MMCFcanplayanimportantroleinregeneratingmanyoftheseecosystems,aswellasensuringthehealthofcarbonsinks,whichplayanessentialroleinstabilisingtheEarth’sclimate.

Todate,however,thesectorhasfacedconsiderablesocialandenvironmentalchallenges–fromdeforestationandbiodiversityimpactsrelatedtorawmaterialsourcing,tosafechemicaluseandlabourrightsconcernsintheproductionprocess.Asan

industryonthecuspofmassivegrowth,thereisanarrowwindowofopportunitytofullyharnessMMCF’spotential.

TheMMCF2030Vision

TheMMCF2030Visionsetsoutfivecomponents

wherethevaluechainhasrealpotentialtocontributeto

resilienceandregenerationatthiscriticalmomentandintothefuture.Ledbyco-convenorsForumfortheFutureandTextileExchange,thesecomponentshavebeenco-createdthroughengagementwithover50stakeholdersfrommorethan40organisationsrepresentingviewsfromacrosstheMMCFvaluechainandtheirstakeholders.

InkeepingwiththeVision’ssystemicapproach,

thefivecomponentsaretobeviewedasinterdependent

andmutuallyreinforcing.Assuch,eachcomponentmustalsoinformallotherfourcategories.Forinstance,regardforlabour

rightsandsocialwell-beingmustbeupheldwithinallcomponents,andcannotbeworkeduponinisolation.

Importantly,stakeholdersacrosstheMMCFvaluechainunderstandthattheambitionwithinthisVisionisbothnecessaryandchallenging.Itwillnotbepossibletoachievewithoutthe

tenkeyenablersthatconstituteitsfoundations.Threeexamplesofwhattheindustryhasidentifiedasenablerstoinfluenceandharnessarenewformsoffinancing,acceleratedroutestoscaling

innovationandanenablingpolicyenvironment.

Agreatdealofactivityistakingplacealreadyunderneaththesecomponentsandenablers.ThepurposeoftheMMCF2030Visionistohelpbridgegapsbetweenexistinginitiatives,standardsandthebiggerwhole,throughtheadoptionofa

systemsapproach.

TheVisionseekstostretchambitionlevelstowardsNetPositiveoutcomes.Meetingtoday’sstandardsandshowingcontinuousimprovementisanabsoluteminimum,asbecomingNetPositiverequiresustolookbeyondwhatisconsideredgoodtoday.Itcallsuponthesectortocollectivelyrespondtowhatsocietyandtheplanetneed:resilienceandregenerationfromsourcetofinishedproductandbeyond.

TheMMCF2030Visionisnotaformalcommitmentdocumentorstandardagainstwhichorganisationswillbe

measured.ItshouldbeusedinsteadtotestexistingstrategiesagainstwhatisneededtomeetNetPositiveambitions,thusinformingfutureresearch,investmentandotherpriorities.Italsoseekstoencourageexploringnewformsofpartnerships,toenablelearningandaccesstonewresourcesforacceleratedimpact.

Man-MadeCellulosicFibres(MMCF)couldrevolutionisethetextileandfashionindustries,withrippleeffectsthatwouldbefeltdeepintosocietyandacrossourenvironment.Thispublicationsetsouthowtheindustryaimstomakethatimpact‘NetPositive’

throughoutitslifecycle.TheMMCF2030Visionistheculminationofengagementwithover50stakeholdersfrommorethan40

organisations,representingviewsfromacrosstheMMCFvaluechainandbeyond.Thisprocesswasledbyco-convenorsForumfortheFutureandTextileExchange.

MMCFsuchasViscose/Rayon,Lyocell,ModalandCupro

constitutethesecondmostimportantgroupofcellulosicfibresaftercotton,withanannualproductionvolumeofaround6.7milliontonsannually-orapproximately6.2%ofthetotalfibreproductionvolume.3PriortoCOVID-19,MMCFvolumeswereexpectedtoincreaserapidlyoverthenext15years,possiblyreaching10milliontonsannually.4

Asasectoronthecuspofmassivegrowth,MMCFhasthe

potentialtotacklesomeoftheapparelandbroadertextile

industry’smostsignificantsustainabilitychallenges.Justtwo

examplesofthisareitsuniqueprospectsforrealisingcircularfashionthroughpioneeringthereconstitutionoffibres,anditspotentialinregeneratingecosystemsandprovidingcarbon

sinkswithinitsvaluechain.Yet,todate,theMMCFsectorhasfacedconsiderablesocialandenvironmentalchallenges–fromdeforestationandbiodiversityimpacts,aswellaslabourrightsconcernsrelatedtorawmaterialsourcing,totoxicchemicaluseanddischargeintheproductionprocess.

WhyMMCF?AndwhyaVision?

Significantstrideshavebeenmadeintraceability,

transparency,accountabilitymechanisms,greaterdialogue

betweenkeyactorsintheindustry,capitalinvestmentin

cutting-edgetechnology,aswellasmovementsinpolicyandinbrandsourcingnorms.Yet,manyofthesechallengespersisttovaryingdegrees.Inpart,thisisduetoinitiativesbeingfocusedonparticularscopes,limitingtheabilitytoconnectwithothersinasystematicmannerthatenableslearningandacceleratedimpact.

Crucially,theindustryrecognisesthataholisticapproachto

addressinginterrelatedchallengeswithinthefullvaluechain

wouldofferhugeopportunitiesfordeepersystemicchange.TheMMCF2030Visionshowsthisholisticpicture,and

enablestheindustryanditsstakeholderstovieweachpartinthecontextofthewhole.

Buildingonexistingstandards

ItisimportanttoacknowledgethatmuchisalreadybeingdonethatgoessomewaytowardstheMMCF2030Vision.The

overallpurposeisthereforetohelpbridgegapsbetweenexistinginitiativesandthebiggerwhole–throughtheadoptionofasystemsapproach–tohelprealisethefullpotentialofMMCFasasustainablefibre.

Indoingso,theVisionseekstocomplementexistingstandardsandinitiativesbyinspiringactorstolookbeyondwhatmightbepossibletoday–acalltoactionthatseekstostimulatenewkindsofpartnershipsandinvestment.

Accordingly,theMMCF2030Visionisnotintendedasaformalcommitmentdocumentorstandardagainstwhich

organisationswillbemeasured.Instead,thecorepurposeistoreflect–andcontinuetostrengthen–acollectivesenseofambitionthatneedstobeheldandtrackedbytheindustryinordertomovethesectorforward.Forthisreason,existing

standards*arecitedasareferencepointtowhatmustconstitutetheminimumlevelofcommitment,butarenotthefocusoftheVisionitself.

Theultimategoalofsustainabledevelopmentistoenablealltoflourish-currentandfuturegenerations-withinthemeansoftheplanet.Toachievethis,theDoughnutEconomicsframeworkinvitesustothinkmorebroadlyaboutthetrueinputsandoutputsofour

economiccycle.5TheMMCF2030Visionhasadoptedthisapproachtoexplorehowtheindustrycanmoreeffectivelycontributetothestrengtheningofoursocialfoundationsandtheregenerationofourecologicalsystems.

Usingthe‘Doughnut’hasenabledtheMMCFindustrytobuildacollective

understandingofitsmostsignificantcontributionsanditspotential,andhowitsworkinoneareacanstrengthenorundermineanother.Forinstance,itiskeenlyawareoftheneedtomitigateclimatechangeandbiodiversitylossthroughthemanagementofsustainableforests.Butwhatstepsmustbetakentoensurethatthesector’sgrowthimprovessocio-economicoutcomesforthosewhoselivelihoodsdependonthem?

Similarly,howcanprogressinchemicalsmanagementfurtherenhancesocialoutcomesrelatedtohealth,foodsecurityoraccesstocleanwater?

Theframeworkhasalsoenabledasystematicanalysisofwheretherearereal

opportunitiesforfurtheraction.Unlockingtheseopportunitiesinvolvesexploringhowdisproportionateimpactsonmarginalisedgroupscanbefurthermitigated.Other

relatedquestionsinclude:towhatextentcancirculareconomypilotssupportajusttransition?

ThechallengessetoutinrelationtoeachcomponentoftheVisionare

informedbytheimperativetothrivewithintheplanet’senvironmentalandsocialboundaries.

PrinciplesbehindtheMMCF2030Vision

TheVisionsetsoutwhattheMMCFindustrycollectivelyagreesisrequiredtooperatewithinthe‘Doughnut’.Theindustryissettingoutanambitiontonotonlydolessharm,butinfact,tohaveaNetPositiveimpactbybuildingresilienceandscalingregeneration.This

requiresashiftinwaysofdoingbusiness.ItmeansoperatingbyNetPositiveprinciples(seenextpage)thataredesignedtoelevateambitionbeyondriskavoidanceandincrementalimprovements.6

MMCFhasuniqueNetPositivepotentialinmanyways,including:

●Itcouldrealisecircularfashion.Beingabletohonestlyandcrediblyshareprogressonthisarea,andgoingbeyondpilotstocatalysingthecollectionandsorting

infrastructureonaglobalscalecouldexemplifyoneareaofNetPositiveambition.

●Itcouldre-generatekeyecosystemsandensurethehealthofvitalareasofhighcarbonstock(HCS)andconservationvalue(HCV).

●Itcouldanchormuchneededcross-commodity,landscape-levelapproachestobuildinglong-termcommunityprosperityandresilience.

●Itcouldexemplifytheaccelerationofclimateandotherscience.Withregardstoinnovation,contributingtoacceleratingthescienceopenlyandenablingothersto

implementrelatedmeasuresisanadditionalreflectionofNetPositiveambition.

Science-basedapproachesandsocialimpact

WhiletheVisiondoesnotsetnewstandardsforforestry,chemicals,oranyotherpartofthesupplychain,itsfocusonalignmentbehindNetPositiveambitionsseekstoserveas

guidancetoinformscientificandlifecycle-basedapproaches.Thismustincludeagreaterfocusonsocialimpact.

Whatdowemeanby‘NetPositive’?

Regenerative

Revitalisesthenaturalworld,strengthenscommunities,and

improvesindividualwellbeingoverthelong-term.ANetPositiveapproachgenerateslong-termbeneficialimpactsanddoesnotcauseirreversiblelossesinbiodiversity.ThisinvolvestheMMCFsectormanagingitswasteanduseofhazardouschemicals,

improvingbiodiversityoutcomesonlandimpactedbysourcinganddistributingvalueequitablyacrossthevaluechain.

Material

Focusesontheindustry’sgreatestimpactsonsocietyandtheenvironment,aswellasonitslargestareasofuniquefuture

potential.Apositiveimpactinonematerialissuecannot

compensateforthenegativeimpactorfootprintinanother.Forinstance,becauseMMCFhavethepotentialtoreconstitute

qualityfibresfromwastetheyhaveamajoranduniqueroleinclosingtheloopforfashion.

Systemic

ANetPositiveapproachseekstoinfluenceandcatalysepositivechangeacrossthevaluechain,andcommittoinfluencingwidersocial,environmental,andeconomicsystems.Thiscouldincludeindustry-ledpartnershipswithgovernmenttodevelopconsistentglobalstandardsonbannedchemicalsinallregions.Also,

collaboratingatalandscapelevel,takingacross-commodityapproachtoregeneratinglandandwatershedsiscritical.

Transparent

ANetPositiveapproachrequiresthatprogressbesharedopenlyandhonestly.ThisrequirestheMMCFsectortohaveaclearandagreedwaytomeasureprogressacrossgeographies.Reportingonactionsandprogresseasilyaccessible.WhileNetPositiveisajourney,andprogressisrecorded,absolutereductionsor

improvementsmattermost.

Whereitcamefromandtheimportanceofinterrelationships

ForumfortheFutureandTextileExchangehaveengagedwithover100stakeholdersacrossmorethan80organisations,representingviewsfromacrosstheMMCFvaluechainandbeyondinthecreationoftheVisionthatissetoutinthe

followingsection.

TheengagementswereanchoredaroundavisioningworkshopattheTextileSustainabilityConferenceinVancouverinOctober2019,twoonlinevisioningsessionswithstakeholdersbasedinChinaandwiderAsiainMarch2020,surveys,aswellasongoingengagementwithAdvisoryPartners.Together,wearrivedatfiveComponentstotheVisionandasetofEnablers,assummarisedinthegraphiconthefollowingpage.

Inlinewithtakingasystemicapproach,theMMCF2030Visionrequiresstakeholderstoregardthefivecomponentsasinterdependentandmutuallyreinforcing.Tothisend,theregenerativeprinciplesetoutinthefirstcomponentisonethatmustalsoinformallotherfourcategories.Similarly,regardforlabourrightsandsocialwellbeingmustbeupheld

alongsideallothercomponentsrelatingtoeconomicprosperityandenvironmentalprotection.

Importantly,itwillnotbepossibletoachievetheVisionwithoutthetenkeyenablersthatconstituteitsfoundations.Newformsoffinancing,acceleratedroutestoscalinginnovationandanenablingpolicyenvironmentarejustthreeexamplesofwhattheindustryrecogniseasenablerstheymustinfluenceandharness.

MMCFareprimarilyderivedfromthe‘cellulose’orwoodpulpfromfast-growing,regenerativetreessuchaseucalyptus,beechand

pine.Morethan150milliontreesareloggedfromforestsand

plantationseveryyearasaresult.Ifplacedendtoend,thetrees

usedtoproducecellulosicfibreswouldcircletheEarthseventimes.7

Whiletheheavyrelianceonwoodpulphasraisedconcernsover

deforestation,forecastsingrowthlikewisehighlighttheincreasinginfluencethattheMMCFindustrycanhaveindetermininghow

carbonsinksaremanagedandhowbiodiversityoutcomesmightbeoptimisedinthesourcingoffeedstock.

ThisiscriticalinlightoftheIUCN’sdeclarationthathaltingthelossanddegradationofnaturalsystems,andpromotingtheirrestoration,havethepotentialtocontributeoverone-thirdofthetotalclimate

changemitigationrequiredby2030.8Itisadditionallysoasmorethan1billionpeopledependonforestsfortheirlivelihoods
