Introduction

Cardiopulmonaryresuscitation(CPR)isanemergencymedicalprocedurethataimstosavethelifeofapersonwhohasstoppedbreathingorwhosehearthasstoppedfunctioning.CPRinvolvesaseriesofsteps,includingchestcompressions,rescuebreaths,anddefibrillation(ifavailable),thatcanhelpoxygenatethebrainandothervitalorgansuntiladvancedmedicalcarearrives.Inthisguide,wewillprovideacomprehensiveoverviewofCPR,includingthesteps,techniques,andtoolsrequiredtoperformitcorrectly.

Method

1.Checkthesceneforsafety:BeforebeginningCPR,itisessentialtoensurethattheareaissafeforboththerescuerandthepersoninneed.Ifthereisanydangersuchasfireortoxicgas,itmustberesolvedbeforeattemptingCPR.

2.Checktheperson'sresponsiveness:Ifthepersonisnotresponding,youshouldcallouttheirnameloudlyandtaptheirshoulder.Ifthereisstillnoresponse,theyarelikelyincardiacarrest.

3.Callemergencyservices:Assoonasyouhaveestablishedthatthepersonisincardiacarrest,calltheemergencyservices.Theywillprovideguidanceonwhattodonext,andcandispatchparamedicstoyourlocation.

4.Beginchestcompressions:Placethepersonontheirbackonahardsurfaceandkneelbesidethem.Placetheheelofonehandonthecenteroftheperson'schestbetweenthenipples,andplacetheotherhandontopofthefirsthand.Pressdownwiththehandstoadepthofabouttwoinches,andrepeat30timesatarateof100-120compressionsperminute.Continuethesechestcompressionsuntilprofessionalhelparrives.

5.Opentheairway:Afterthefirstthirtychestcompressions,tilttheperson'sheadbackslightlyandlifttheirchintoopentheairway.Checkforbreathingbylookingfortheriseandfallofthechest,andlistenforanysoundofbreathing.

6.Giverescuebreaths:Ifthepersonisnotbreathing,givetworescuebreaths.Pinchtheperson'snoseandgiveafullbreathintotheperson'smouth.Thebreathshouldtakeaboutonesecondandmakethechestrise.Pauseandobserveforbreathing.

7.Continuecompressionsandrescuebreaths:Aftergivingtherescuebreaths,continuewith30chestcompressionsandtworescuebreaths,alternatingthemuntilemergencyservicesarrive.Remembertoclearthemouthofanyobstructionsandkeeptheairwayopen.

8.UsetheAED:Ifanautomatedexternaldefibrillator(AED)isavailable,useitassoonaspossible.Followthepromptsonthedeviceandstopcompressionsbrieflyfortheshocktobedelivered.Resumecompressionsimmediatelyaftertheshock,andcontinuethecycleofcompressionsandrescuebreaths.
