Questionnairesassessingtheparticipantsemotionalstatesrevealednosignificantdifference

betweenthetwoexperiences,accordingtotheresults.Astheforestryresearcherleadingthe

projectexplained,ctIwasawarethattheforestwasnotreal.However,theexperiencewasvivid,

anditwaseasyformetoforgetthatIwasinanexperimentalroom.^^

Therearelimitations,ofcourse.Sincecomputerprocessingpowerisfinite（有限）,virtual

forestshavephysicalboundaries.Someoftheparticipantssaidtheyfeltcagedwhenthey

encounteredtheinvisibleforestwall.Powerconstraints（約束）alsomeanthecomputerisnot

perfectatsmalldetailslikemushroomsorinsects.Norcanvirtualenvironmentsimitateevery

sensoryexperienceofarealforest,likethesmellofdampleaves.Makingothersensations,like

participants.Initially,wehadparticipantsratetheircopingstrategiestorelievetheirstress.Those

managingstressbyfocusingontheirappreciationforlife'sbeautyreportedexperiencinglifeas

highlymeaningful.Inthefollow-ups,weaskedthemtoratetheextenttowhichtheyagreedwith

variousstatements,suchas“Ihaveagreatappreciationforthebeautyoflife^^andotherstatements

relatedtocoherence,purpose,existentialmattering.Ourresultsshowedthatthemorepeople

indicatedthattheywere"'appreciatinglifb”,themoretheyfelttheirexistencevaluable.Inthe

subsequentexperiment,wefurtherexploredthephenomenonbyaskingparticipantstowatchan

awe-inspiringvideo,theyalsoreportedhavingagreatersenseofexperientialappreciationand

meaninginlifeinthesemoments,comparedwiththosewatchingmoreneutralvideos.

Thefinalresultsconfirmedouroriginaltheory:appreciatingsmallthingscanmakelifefeel

moremeaningful.Butapplyingthatinsightcanbedifficult.Ourmodem,fast-paced,

project-orientedlifestylesfillthedaywithtargets.Weareonthego,attemptingtomaximizeour

output.Thismakesiteasytomisswhatishappeningrightnow.Yetlifehappensinthepresent

moment.Weshouldslowdown,letlifesurpriseusandembracethesignificanceintheeveryday.

Afterall,weliveinawonderfulworld.Thereisnoendtotheadventureswecanhaveifonlywe

seekthemwithoureyesopen.
