Therearelimitations,ofcourse.Sincecomputerprocessingpowerisfinite(有限),virtual
forestshavephysicalboundaries.Someoftheparticipantssaidtheyfeltcagedwhenthey
encounteredtheinvisibleforestwall.Powerconstraints(約束)alsomeanthecomputerisnot
perfectatsmalldetailslikemushroomsorinsects.Norcanvirtualenvironmentsimitateevery
sensoryexperienceofarealforest,likethesmellofdampleaves.Makingothersensations,like
thefeelofwindwouldprovemorecomplicated.
Virtualenvironmentscanalsocausecybersickness,whichhappenswhenyoureyesperceive
motionwhileyourbodydoesnot.Thatiswhysomepeoplefeltdizzyafterthebathingsessions.

Tobetterunderstandthisappreciation,weconductedaseriesofstudiesinvolvingover3,000
participants.Initially,wehadparticipantsratetheircopingstrategiestorelievetheirstress.Those
managingstressbyfocusingontheirappreciationforlife'sbeautyreportedexperiencinglifeas
highlymeaningful.Inthefollow-ups,weaskedthemtoratetheextenttowhichtheyagreedwith
variousstatements,suchas“Ihaveagreatappreciationforthebeautyoflife^^andotherstatements
relatedtocoherence,purpose,existentialmattering.Ourresultsshowedthatthemorepeople
indicatedthattheywere"'appreciatinglifb”,themoretheyfelttheirexistencevaluable.Inthe
subsequentexperiment,wefurtherexploredthephenomenonbyaskingparticipantstowatchan
awe-inspiringvideo,theyalsoreportedhavingagreatersenseofexperientialappreciationand
meaninginlifeinthesemoments,comparedwiththosewatchingmoreneutralvideos.
Thefinalresultsconfirmedouroriginaltheory:appreciatingsmallthingscanmakelifefeel
moremeaningful.Butapplyingthatinsightcanbedifficult.Ourmodem,fast-paced,
project-orientedlifestylesfillthedaywithtargets.Weareonthego,attemptingtomaximizeour
output.Thismakesiteasytomisswhatishappeningrightnow.Yetlifehappensinthepresent
moment.Weshouldslowdown,letlifesurpriseusandembracethesignificanceintheeveryday.
Afterall,weliveinawonderfulworld.Thereisnoendtotheadventureswecanhaveifonlywe
seekthemwithoureyesopen.
