RobertHaydenisthefirstblackPoetLaureateintheLibraryofCongress.BorninasluminDetroit,hewasafosterchildshortlyafterhisbirth.AtWayneStateUniversity,heobtainedabachelor’sdegree,andparticipatedintheFederalWritersProjectinDetroitin1936and1938.Heobtainedamaster’sdegreeattheUniversityofMichigan,whichhadaprofoundinfluenceonhispoetry.Aftergraduation,hetaughtatFiskUniversityfor23years.In1969,hereturnedtotheUniversityofMichigantoteachuntilhisdeath.

Manyofhispoemsreflectthefeelingsofblackpeople.Haydenisgoodatusingthedetailedtechniquesofpoetry,andpromotesthesymbolicmeaningofpoetrythroughcompression,euphemism,juxtapositionandmontage.
