OnedayMr.andMrs.Whitegoshoppingbycar.They
stoptheircarnearastore.Theybuyalotofthingsand
theywanttoputthethingsinthecar.ButMr.White
can'topenthedoorofthecar;sotheyaskapoliceman
tohelpthem.Thepolicemanisveryfriendlytohelp
them.Justthenamancomesupandshouts:"Whatare
youdoingwitmycar?”
Mr.andMrs.Whitetakealookatthecar'snumber
andtheyarefrozenthere.Itisn'ttheircar.
TheWindAndTheSun
Onedaythewindsaidtothesun,“Lookatthatman
walkingalongtheroad.Icangethiscloakoffmore
quicklythanyoucan.^^
“Wewillseeaboutthat,“saidthesun.“Iwillletyou
tryfirst.”
Sothewindtriedtomakethemantakeoffhiscloak.He
blewandblew,butthemanonlypulledhiscloakmore
closelyaroundhimself.
“Igiveup,“saidthewindatlast.“Icannotgethis
cloakThenthesuntried.Heshoneashardashe
could.Themansoonbecamehotandtookoffhiscloak.

Thefoxopenshismouthandsays,"Thecockis
mine,notyours.''Justthenthecockrunsawayfromthe
foxandfliesintothetree.

Onceanaughtyboywaslookingafterhissheepin
themountain.Hewantedtomakeajokebecausehefelt
lonely.Hecriedloudly,"Herecomesawolf!Help!"On
hearingit,thevillagersallranuptosavehim,buthe

Onedayacrowfoundapieceofmeat.Shepickedit
upandflewtoatalltree.Shewasjustgoingtoeatthe
meatwhenafoxsawher.Hecameandstoodunderthe
treeandsaid,"Howbeautifulyouare!"Thecrowwas
gladtohearthat.Thenthefoxsaid,"Icanseeyour
beautifulface,butIcan'thearyourbeautifulvoice.Why
don'tyousingasong?"Thecrowbegantosing.But
whensheopenedhermouth,shedroppedthemeat,
andthefoxpickeditupatonce.
TwoFriends
Twofriendswerewalkingintheforest.Oneistall,
andtheotherisshort.Thetallmansaidtotheother,
"Wearegoodfriends.Ifanybeastcomes,I\'llhelp
you."Theshortmananswered,"Ofcourse,wearegood
friends."
Atthistimeabearcametothem.Thetallman
quicklyclimbedupatree,buttheshortonecouldn\'t.
Hesaid,"Helpme,Ican\'tclimbup."Butthetallman
said,"No,thetreeisnotstrong."
Theshortmanhadtothrowhimselftotheground
andheldhisbreath.Thebearsmelthimandwentaway.
Thetallmancamedownandasked/'Whatdidthebear
saytoyou?"
"Herunsawayfromyouwhenyouareingreatneed.
Heisnotyourfriend,"heanswered.

AnAntandaBird
Onceanantwasdrinkingbyasmallriverandfellin.
Shetriedherbesttoteachthebank,butshecould\'t
moveatall.Atthistime,abirdthrewapieceofwoodto
her.Shewassaved.
Whentheantwasdryingherselfinthegrass,aman
came,carryingaguninhishand.Justasthemanwas

Therewasoncealittlegirlwhowasveryprettyand
delicate,butinsummershewasforcedtorunabout

red,andthatlookedsodangerous!
InthemiddleofthevillagelivedoldDameShoemaker;

pairofshoesoutofoldredstripsofcloth;theywere
veryclumsy,butitwasakindthought.Theywere
meantforthelittlegirl.ThelittlegirlwascalledKaren.
Ontheverydayhermotherwasburied,Karenreceived
theredshoes,andworethemforthefirsttime.They
werecertainlynotintendedformourning,butshehad
noothers,andwithstockinglessfeetshefollowedthe
poorstrawcoffininthem.
Suddenlyalargeoldcarriagedroveup,andalargeold
ladysatinit:shelookedatthelittlegirl,feltcompassion
forher;andthensaidtotheclergyman:
"Here,givemethelittlegirl.Iwilladopther!"AndKaren
believedallthishappenedonaccountoftheredshoes,
buttheoldladythoughttheywerehorrible,andthey
wereburnt.ButKarenherselfwascleanlyandnicely
dressed;shemustlearntoreadandsew;andpeople
saidshewasanicelittlething,butthelooking-glasssaid:
"Thouartmorethannice,thouartbeautiful!"Nowthe
queenoncetravelledthroughtheland,andshehadher
littledaughterwithher.Andthislittledaughterwasa
princess,andpeoplestreamedtothecastle,andKaren
wastherealso,andthelittleprincessstoodinher
finewhitedress,inawindow,andletherselfbestaredat;
shehadneitheratrainnoragoldencrown,butsplendid
redmoroccoshoes.Theywerecertainlyfarhandsomer
thanthoseDameShoemakerhadmadeforlittleKaren.
Nothingintheworldcanbecomparedwithredshoes.
NowKarenwasoldenoughtobeconfirmed;shehad
newclothesandwastohavenewshoesalso.Therich
shoemakerinthecitytookthemeasureofherlittlefoot.
Thistookplaceathishouse,inhisroom;wherestood
largeglass-cases,filledwithelegantshoesandbrilliant
boots.Allthislookedcharming,buttheoldladycould
notseewell,andsohadnopleasureinthem.
Inthemidstoftheshoesstoodapairofredones,
justlikethosetheprincesshadworn.Howbeautifulthey
were!Theshoemakersaidalsotheyhadbeenmadefor
thechildofacount,buthadnotfitted.
"Thatmustbepatentleather!"saidtheoldlady."They
shineso!""Yes,theyshine!"saidKaren,andtheyfitted,
andwerebought,buttheoldladyknewnothingabout
theirbeingred,elseshewouldneverhave
allowedKarentohavegoneinredshoestobeconfirmed.
Yetsuchwasthecase.
Everybodylookedatherfeet;andwhenshestepped
throughthechanceldooronthechurchpavement,it
seemedtoherasiftheoldfiguresonthetombs,those
portraitsofoldpreachersandpreachers'wives,with
stiffruffs,andlongblackdresses,fixedtheireyesonher
redshoes.Andshethoughtonlyofthemasthe
clergymanlaidhishanduponherhead,andspokeof
theholybaptism,ofthecovenantwithGod,andhowshe
shouldbenowamaturedChristian;andtheorgan
pealedsosolemnly;thesweetchildren'svoices
sang,andtheoldmusic-directorssang,butKarenonly
thoughtofherredshoes.
Intheafternoon,theoldladyheardfromeveryonethat
theshoeshadbeenred,andshesaidthatitwasvery
wrongofKaren,thatitwasnotatallbecoming,andthat
infutureKarenshouldonlygoinblackshoesto
church,evenwhensheshouldbeolder.
ThenextSundaytherewasthesacrament,andKaren
lookedattheblackshoes,lookedatthered
ones—lookedatthemagain,andputontheredshoes.
Thesunshonegloriously;Karenandtheoldladywalked
alongthepaththroughthecorn;itwasratherdusty
there.
Atthechurchdoorstoodanoldsoldierwithacrutch,
andwithawonderfullylongbeard,whichwasmorered
thanwhite,andhebowedtotheground,andaskedthe
oldladywhetherhemightdusthershoes.AndKaren
stretchedoutherlittlefoot.
"See,whatbeautifuldancingshoes!"saidthes
