ThefactthatIliketolookintothemirrorhastodowithmygrannywithwhomIspentmostofmychildhood.IrememberclearlythatonenightIheardhermurmuring,"Womencan'tbeseen.Womencan'tbeseen."IwassoconfusedastolookintothemirrorthenextmorningtocheckifIcouldindeedseemyself.Onlynowasayoungwomanmyself,canIunderstandthatitwasnotphysicalvisibilitythatgrannyhadonhermind.

Grannyspentallherlifetakingcareofthefamily,dayinanddayout.Shecookedforherhusbandand10children.Butwheneverguestscame,sheandotherfemalefamilymembershadtoeatbythestoveinthesmallkitchen.Atfamilydiscussions,shewasneveraskedforheropinion.Aftergrandpapassedaway,shehadtolistentomyuncle,hereldestson,fulfilledherdutyasdaughter,wife,andmother;yetasaperson,sheremainedlittlenoticed.Eventhoughshecouldseeherselfinthemirrorofthedressingtable,shewasnevervisibleinthemirrorofsociety.

Ihavebeenlivingadifferentlife.Athome,Imakedecisionstogetherwiththerestofthefamily.Inschool,Ioftentakechargeofvariousactivitiesthesameasotherboysandgirls.Notonlythat,Icanseesomethinggrannycouldnothavedreamedof─makingdecisionsformyownfuture.Mylifehasbeenaseriesofdecisions.IcouldchoosefromseveraluniversitiesasIcameoutofhighschool.Atuniversity,IcouldchoosefromarangeofsubjectsfromEnglishliteraturetobusinesslaw.Andnowupongraduation,Iamagainfacedwithdecisions─tofurthermystudyortogotowork;tostayinChinaortogoabroad;togetmarriedrightawayortoremainsingleforabitlonger.

ItdoesnotmatterwhetherornotIwillbecomefamousorrich,butIwilltreasurethechancetodemonstratemypotentialandtohelpotherwomendemonstratetheirsasfullmembersofsociety,fullyvisibleinthemirrorofhistory.IwilltreasureitbecausetheabundanceofchoicethatIenjoycameonlyafterdecadesofeffortsmadebymygranny,mymum,andmillionsofotherChinesewomen.

However,thechoicestobemadebymeandothersofmygenerationareagreatchallenge.Themisconceptionthatmenaresuperiortowomenisstilldominatingmanypeople'sminds.Whilemenareencouragedtocompeteandtoassertthemselves,weareexpectedtobequiet,loyalandobedient.Thisisnotverydifferentfromwhatisexpectedofusasgoodwivesandgoodmothers.Thechallengewefacecallsforahigherlevelofourpersonaldevelopmentandself-determination.

ThestoryofmygrandmotherandmyselfmirrorsthelivesofmillionsofotherwomeninChinaandperhapsintheworld.Manyofthemstillleadthelifeofmygrandmother.Theirworthisnotyetrecognized.Itistheresponsibilityofayoungpersonlikemetoworkhardandstrugglehardsothattheytoowillseethemselvesandwillbeseeninthemirrorofsociety.

Thisismydream.Thisdream,Ibelieve,isnotonlysharedbyourgrandmothers,mothersandsisters,butalsobymanyofourfathers,brothers,husbandsandmalecolleagues.
