identityandtraits.ButwithChinesevolunteers,theresultswerestrikinglydifferent.The"me"circuithummednotonlywhentheythoughtwhetheraparticularadjectivedescribedthemselves,but

alsowhentheyconsideredwhetheritdescribedtheirmother.TheWesternersshowednosuch

overlapbetweenselfandmom.Dependingwhetheronelivesinaculturethatviewstheselfas

autonomousanduniqueorasconnectedtoandpartofalargerwhole,thisneuralcircuittakeson

quitedifferentfunctions.

"Culturalneuroscience,"asthisnewfieldiscalled,isaboutdiscoveringsuchdifferences.Some

PsychologistNaliniAmbadyofTuftsfoundsomethingsimilarwhensheandcolleaguesshowed

drawingsofpeopleinasubmissivepose(headdown,shouldershunched)oradominantone(arms

crossed,faceforward)toJapaneseandAmericans.Thebrain′sdopamine-fueledrewardcircuit

becamemostactiveatthesightofthestance--dominantforAmericans,submissiveforJapanese--thateachvolunteer′sculturemostvalues,theyreportedin2009.Thisraisesanobvious
